Iceland meet Finland in the opening match of UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 as Group A gets underway.
Both teams are considered underdogs in Group A so victory is imperative in this opening game for their chances of progressing to the knockout stages.
Team News
Iceland have no fresh injury concerns as West Ham’s Dagny Brynjarsdottir and Leicester’s Hlin Eiriksdottir feature in the squad.
Finland also have no fresh injury concerns to report, with Eva Nystrom, Ria Oling, Olga Ahtinen, Oona Siren, Eveliina Summanen and Jutta Rantala familiar to English fans.
When is Kick-Off?
Iceland meet Finland at Arena Thun, Thun, Switzerland, on Wednesday 2 July at 6pm CEST (5pm UK Time), live on ITV1 in the UK.
Stat Attack
- This is Iceland’s first meeting against Finland at the UEFA Women’s Euro Finals.
- Finland have never met Iceland at any stage in this competition prior to this meeting.
- Iceland have won just one of seven matches coming into this tournament in 2025 (W1, D4, L2).
- Finland have kept four clean sheets in seven matches across all competitions in 2025 coming into this tournament (W3, D2, L2).
Prediction
Although this Nordic derby feels like an underwhelming tournament opener, it is actually a crucial game because victory will give either Iceland or Finland early confidence in a difficult group with Switzerland and Norway, where both teams aren’t expected to escape from so this feels do-or-die already for them.
I however do expect this to be a close battle purely given the importance of this match as a draw would leave both teams to pull off upsets in their two other group matches.
Finland though look like they have the better defence coming into this game so I do fancy them to nick this.
Prediction: Iceland 0-1 Finland
Result: Iceland 0-1 Finland
