Liverpool have signed attacking midfielder, Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen in a £116.5m transfer.
Wirtz had been the subject of interest from several top European clubs after he scored 16 goals and contributed 15 assists in 45 appearances this season, with Manchester City snubbed after face-to-face discussions with the 22-year-old.
Liverpool consequently became Wirtz’s preferred destination and after extensive negotiations, Arne Slot’s Reds agreed a £116.5m deal – including add-ons – for the attacking midfielder, who has left Leverkusen with 57 goals in 197 appearances across six seasons.
Leverkusen will receive an initial fixed £100m fee but £16.5m in add-ons could see Wirtz become the Premier League’s record transfer signing, should all elements of the add-on clauses be achieved during Wirtz’s spell at Anfield.
Following his medical, Wirtz signed a five-year contract at Anfield and is now “very happy and very proud” to be a Liverpool player with a fresh challenge.
“I’m really excited to have a new adventure in front of me. This was also a big point of my thoughts: that I want to have something completely new, to go out of the Bundesliga and to join the Premier League.
“I will see how I can perform there. I hope I can do my best. I spoke also with some players who played there and they told me that it’s perfect for me and every pitch is perfect, you can enjoy every game. I’m really looking forward to playing my first game.”
Wirtz began his career at SV Grun-Weiß Brauweller before he went on to play for Cologne and Leverkusen, where he graduated into their senior team in May 2020 during a 4-1 away victory at Werder Bremen in Bundesliga.
The youngster eventually went on to achieve the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal double in the 2023-24 season, which was followed by the DFL-Supercup.
Wirtz represents Germany in international football where he has seven goals in 31 senior appearances, with his six goals having all been scored in 2024.
