Tottenham Head Coach, Thomas Frank has iterated that he is “very humble” to inherit foundations laid by his precedessor, Ange Postecoglou.
Postecoglou spent two seasons in charge but was sacked earlier this month despite having led Tottenham to Europa League glory, and Frank – in his first formal interview with SpursPlay as Postecoglou’s replacement – iterated that the Greek-Australian will “forever be a legend in Tottenham,” with his “special” achievement.
Frank also noted the foundations that Postecoglou had laid which he is humble to be entrusted to build upon by the club and hopefully bring more success to North London.
“It’s important to understand we all stand on the shoulders of others. I’m going in on the foundation Ange built, and his coaching staff, and I’m very humble about that. I’ll do my very best to continue the great work he put in.
“The feeling, the excitement, the joy and the happiness in the fans’ faces, the pictures—was ‘wow’. Hopefully, we can create more of those moments. That will be the ultimate dream: to do that and build on that.”
Almost a week on from confirmation of his move to Tottenham from Brentford, Frank reflected on the honour of managing Spurs as an “extraordinary” feeling, aware that he faces a tough task to win over players who showed their support for Postecoglou even after his sacking.
Frank added that he is happy to have “a good squad” to work with and believes that he can lead the players and club to fulfil their potential.
“It’s an exciting, massive club with massive potential. So, it’s just super, super exciting.”
Looking ahead to the new season which sees Tottenham begin their campaign with the UEFA Super Cup against PSG on 13 August, Frank explained that he had held discussions with chairman, Daniel Levy plus Vinai Venkatesham and Johan Lange about how “to build a team and a club.”
The 51-year-old however warned that for success to be achieved, it is important to have a positive working environment of team members.
“Of course, it’s not just me. I think it’s very important to say: yes, the Head Coach is an important person, but if I don’t have good people around me, it’s impossible. You can’t do anything alone, in my opinion.
“If you want to do something quick, you can go alone. If you want to do something big or achieve something big, you go together. So, it’s definitely about doing things together – me, the staff, the players.
“I think alignment is key – from top to bottom. Of course it starts from Daniel, Vinai, Johan, and me – and the more the four of us can be aligned, just like a unit, an unbreakable unit, the stronger we’ll be.”
Although his huge move from Brentford to Tottenham feels special at the moment following his return from a holiday, Frank has urged Spurs fans to show patience even if it is another bumpy season.
“There’ll be ups and downs – right now, it’s a fairytale. Everyone’s happy, the sun is shining, it’s fantastic.
“We haven’t played one game yet. Hopefully we’ll win a lot. We’ll work very hard every single day to make sure we create as many magic moments for the fans and put them together and at the end of the season we’ll have had a very good season.”
