Tottenham Hotspur have signed Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich for £42.6m in a permanent transfer, following his successful loan stint.
Tel spent the second half of last season on loan at Tottenham where he scored three goals and contributed one assist in 20 appearances as Spurs won the Europa League title, which proved enough for the North London to sign him on a permanent transfer.
Following a period of negotiations with Bayern, Spurs will pay an initial £29.8m fee plus a £8.5m loan fee covering his loan stint at the club, plus there will be a further £4.3m in add-ons, potentially bringing the total fee to £42.6m, with Tel having signed a six-year contract until June 2031.
The move also sees the 20-year-old become the first permanent transfer signing under Thomas Frank, after the Dane replaced Ange Postecoglou after the latter was sacked due to Spurs’ 17th-placed Premier League finish.
Bayern Board member for sport, Max Eberl added that Tel “was a popular figure in the squad, who always gave his all for the club and the team. The move to Tottenham has turned out to be the right one for his development.
“He’ll now continue this journey with Spurs. We thank him for his commitment in the FC Bayern shirt and wish him all the best for his future. Merci, Mathys!”
Tel began his senior career at Rennes where he made 10 appearances before he moved to Bayern where he enjoyed 16 goals in 69 appearances across his first two seasons, in which they won Bundesliga and DFL Supercup titles in his first season.
Last summer though saw ex Burnley boss, Vincent Kompany become Bayern’s new manager who didn’t consider Tel part of his future plans, as the youngster only managed 14 appearances before he made his loan switch to Spurs.
Tel represents France at international level and is currently on duty at the UEFA Under-21s Euro alongside Spurs teammate, Wilson Odobert who too plays for France.
