Ryan Mason has been appointed as West Bromwich Albion Head Coach on a three-year contract until June 2028.

Mason’s arrival marks his first permanent senior managerial positions, having twice took the reins at Tottenham on an interim basis after Jose Mourinho and Cristian Stellini wee sacked in April 2021 and April 2023 respectively.

Stellini though had replaced Antonio Conte as Acting Head Coach a month earlier but oversaw a run of just one win in four matches, which culminated in a humiliating 6-1 loss at Newcastle.

The ex Spurs player otherwise had initially overseen Tottenham’s Academy and specifically managed at Under-19s level, before Conte appointed him as an assistant coach which he went on to continue under Ange Postecoglou.

His coaching experiences under some top managers consequently led West Brom to take a chance on him as their new manager on a three-year contract until June 2028, after they finished ninth in the Championship and miss out on the final play-off spot by four points.

In his first official statement as West Brom manager, Mason said that he was “absolutely thrilled” to be given the opportunity to take charge of a club with potential.

“This is a huge club with a fantastic infrastructure and an incredible fan base and I am excited about what we can achieve together.

“Having spoken at length to the board and those at the club I am convinced that Albion is the perfect place for me to be and I can’t wait to get started.

“I will bring with me a huge amount of enthusiasm, dedication and ambition and look forward to a positive future together at such a fantastic club.”

West Brom Chairman, Shilen Patel added that he is “delighted” to sign Mason who will be joined by Nigel Gibbs as Assistant Head Coach, whilst Sam Pooley will serve as Men’s First Team Coach and Head of Performance.

“We have undertaken a thoughtful and expansive search and Ryan always stood out to us among an incredibly strong group of candidates.

“We are excited to have someone whose skillset means he has the aptitude to help us further establish elite standards in both preparation and player development for the first team and across all our team programmes.

“His experiences as both a first team player and coach under some of the game’s most respected minds, along with his time leading academy sides, will be instrumental as we shape a clear philosophy and unified identity at all levels at the Albion.”

Spurs Chairman, Daniel Levy paid tribute to Mason for his work in North London as both a player then coach.

“Ryan has been an integral part of Tottenham Hotspur for a number of years, both as a player and a coach.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Ryan for all his dedication and hard work over the years, and we wish him every success for the future.”
