2026-27 Carabao Cup: Third Round – Millwall vs Newcastle

Millwall meet Newcastle United in a blockbuster third-round tie in the 2026-27 Carabao Cup.

Victory would see Millwall reach the fourth round for the first time since their run to the Quarter-Finals in the 1994-95 edition.

Newcastle meanwhile are looking to advance beyond this stage for a fifth consecutive season.

 

Team News

Jenson Metcalfe is suspended for Millwall following his red card in their 4-0 Championship win over Bolton on Saturday.

Mihailo Ivanovic, Mathis Servais (both hamstring), Tristian Crama (ankle), Josh Coburn (foot) and Casper De Norre (calf) remain sidelined.

Newcastle will be without goalkeeper, Ewen Jaouen after he suffered an ankle injury in training, meaning that manager – Matthias Jaissle has a choice of whether to keep Lukas Hornicek in goal or give Nick Pope his first start of the season.

William Osula (foot), Dan Burn (ankle) and Joelinton (groin) remain absent.

• Millwall beat Newcastle 2-0 away in their only previous League Cup meeting which took place in August 1977 at the second round stage of that season’s competition.
• Newcastle are making their first League Cup visit to Millwall.
• Millwall have won four of their eight League Cup ties played at home so far this decade (W4, L4).
• Excluding penalties, Newcastle have avoided defeat in three of their last five League Cup away ties against London opposition (W2, D1, L2).

 

Prediction

Despite having various injury issues, Millwall have definitely enjoyed a solid start to the season and were ruthlessly clinical in a tight game against Bolton, but this is a chance to show that they can mix it with the top clubs should they go on to get promoted this season.

Newcastle meanwhile certainly dug deep to come from 2-0 down at home to draw 2-2 against Bournemouth in their Premier League clash, having endured a defensively sloppy first half but they looked more solid in the second half so I hope Jaissle tries and build on that half whilst rotating players.

Millwall however can’t be discounted despite their injury issues because they do have the clinical quality to cause issues, but I do think that Newcastle’s depth will be enough for them to find a way through into the fourth round.
