Tottenham Hotspur Sack Jose Mourinho as Manager

Tottenham Hotspur have sacked Jose Mourinho after 17 months in charge of the club.

Mourinho replaced Mauricio Pochettino as manager in November 2019 but could only guide the club to sixth place last season, whilst a drop in form this season has left the club seventh after taking just two points from their last three games

This decision comes just days before Spurs meet Manchester City in this season’s Carabao Cup Final, off the back of just one win in their last six games across all competitions and face a second consecutive season without Champions League football.

Spurs are also out of this season’s Europa League after blowing a 2-0 lead from the first leg to eventually lose their Last 16 tie against Dinamo Zagreb, which leaves Sunday’s Carabao Cup Final as their only hope of silverware this season.

Mourinho’s departure also comes just hours after Spurs announced their controversial decision to break away to join the new European Super League, amidst fury from football organisations, rival clubs and fans.

Speaking on the decision to sack Mourinho, chairman – Daniel Levy paid tribute to the Portuguese’s work throughout the last 17 months, particularly during the Coronavirus pandemic, saying; “Jose and his coaching staff have been with us through some of our most challenging times as a club.”

Levy also praised Mourinho for being “a true professional” with “enormous resilience” across the last 12 months, whilst admitting his regret at how the last 17 months haven’t unfolded as imagined.

Mourinho’s coaching staff consisting of; Joao Sacramento, Nuno Santos, Carlos Lalin and Giovanni Cerra have also been dismissed with immediate effect.

Ryan Mason has been appointed as interim Head Coach for rest of season with Ledley King staying as First Team Assistant, whilst Chris Powell and Nigel Gibbs will be interim Assistant Head Coaches and Michel Vorm become interim Goalkeeping Coach.

Tottenham however have a league game against Southampton on Wednesday 21 April (6pm BST), before taking on City on Sunday 25 April.
