2024-25 Premier League: Week 38 Roundup

Roundup of the final day of 2024-25 Premier League season as the final standings were finalised. 

Ilkay Gundogan’s bicycle-kick and Erling Haaland’s penalty saw Manchester City secure third with a 2-0 win at Fulham, which guaranteed Champions League qualification.

Chelsea edged past Nottingham Forest to secure fourth with a 1-0 win at the City Ground through Levi Colwill’s 50th-minute winner, whilst Nuno Espirito Santo’s Tricky Trees finished seventh.

Carlos Alcaraz’s 65th-minute winner for Everton at St James’ Park left Newcastle set to miss out on the final Champions League spot.

Aston Villa eventually failed to snatch that Champions League spot from Newcastle’s grasp after Unai Emery’s Villains suffered a 2-0 loss at Manchester United, as Amad Diallo and Christian Eriksen netted after Emiliano Martinez was red carded for a foul on Rasmus Højlund.

Villa consequently settled for sixth on goal difference and qualified for next season’s Europa League, whilst Forest will play in the Conference League.

Elsewhere, Jack Hinshelwood’s brace plus late goals from Matt O’Riley and Diego Gomez saw Brighton secure eighth with a comeback 4-1 win at Europa League champions, Tottenham, after Dominic Solanke’s penalty had put Spurs ahead at half-time.

Brentford consequently missed out on eighth after Bryan Mbeumo’s opening goal was cancelled out by Marshall Munetsi in a 1-1 draw at Wolves.

Bournemouth further worsened Brentford’s pain by jumping above Thomas Frank’s Bees to finish ninth after Antoine Semenyo’s second-half brace saw off Leicester in a 2-0 home win for Andoni Iraola’s Cherries.

Mohamed Salah spared Liverpool from a dampened home party with a 85th-minute equaliser in a 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace at Anfield, after Ismaila Sarr had put Oliver Glasner’s Eagles into a ninth-minute lead.

Martin Odegaard’s 90th-minute winner saw Arsenal snatch a 2-1 victory at Southampton to secure the vice-champion honour, after Kieran Tierney’s opening goal was cancelled out by Ross Stewart’s header.

Ipswich bowed out of the top-flight with a 3-1 loss at home to West Ham after Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus sealed victory for the Hammers in the second half, having initially led through James Ward-Prowse’s goal before Nathan Broadhead briefly brought the Tractor Boys level.
