FIA have approved General Motors’ Performance Power Units as a F1 supplier from 2029 season onwards.

Confirmation of General Motors’ ability to be a power unit supplier comes just months after their F1 constructor entry was officially confirmed for next season, albeit under the Cadillac name with Ferrari providing power units for at least three seasons until General Motors’ power units are homologated.

Addressing the latest step for General Motors, FIA President – Mohammed Ben Sulayem explained that the approval “affirms the journey has been worthwhile.”

Ben Sulayem proceeded to iterate that General Motors becoming a power unit supplier is the latest development within F1’s global expansion on and off track.

“Welcoming GM Performance Power Units LLC. as an approved power unit supplier for the Championship starting in 2029 marks another step in the global expansion of Formula 1 and highlights the growing interest from world-class automotive manufacturers like General Motors.

“Their dedication to innovation, sustainability, and competition is fully aligned with the FIA’s vision for the future of our sport. It also strengthens our commitment to making motorsport more accessible and inclusive worldwide—welcoming new manufacturers, advancing technology, and connecting with a broader, more diverse fan base.”
