2024-25 Carabao Cup Quarter-Finals: Newcastle vs Brentford

Newcastle United host Brentford at St James’ Park in the 2024-25 Carabao Cup Quarter-Finals.

Victory would see Newcastle reach the semi-finals for the second time in three seasons, whilst Brentford can progress to the last four for the second time in their history.

Team News

Newcastle will have Joelinton available because his one-match ban for five yellow cards is only applied to Premier League fixtures.

Sean Longstaff however is suspended after he was booked in Newcastle’s wins over AFC Wimbledon and Chelsea in the last two rounds of this competition.

Emil Krafth (shoulder), Callum Wilson (hamstring), Nick Pope, Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles (all knee) remain absent.

Brentford could be without Paris Maghoma due to a minor injury.

Christian Norgaard and Keane Lewis-Potter are both one booking away from missing the semi-final’s first leg if Brentford progress.

Josh Dasilva, Rico Henry (both knee), Gustavo Nunes (back), Matias Jensen and Aaron Hickey (both hamstring) remain sidelined.

When is Kick-Off?

Newcastle host Brentford at St James’ Park on Wednesday 18 December at 7:45pm GMT, live on Sky Sports + in the UK.

Stat Attack

  • Newcastle have won one of two previous League Cup ties against Brentford (W1, L1).
  • Brentford lost 4-1 after extra time in their only previous League Cup trip to Newcastle in September 2001.
  • Newcastle are yet to keep a clean sheet at home to Brentford in all domestic cup competitions.
  • Sean Longstaff has been booked in Newcastle’s last two League Cup ties at home.
  • All five of Brentford’s goals in this season’s League Cup came from five different goalscorers.

Prediction

Following their demolition of Leicester on Saturday, this game is now a test of Newcastle’s consistency because they need to start bringing that quality on a regular basis.

Brentford however beat Eddie Howe’s Magpies at home in the top-flight just over a week ago so will have a psychological edge, but they will have to be more clinical than they were at Chelsea amidst their away woes with one away win all season.

Nevertheless I do expect both teams to bring their top game to this clash so can see another cracker brewing, but Newcastle should make home advantage count.

Prediction: Newcastle 2-1 Brentford

Result: Newcastle 3-1 Brentford
