2026 FIFA World Cup: Round of 16 – Portugal vs Spain

Portugal meet Spain meet Spain in a blockbuster Iberian derby in the Round of 16 at 2026 FIFA World Cup. 

Victory would see Portugal reach Quarter-Finals at consecutive World Cup tournaments for the first time – having previously advanced to the last eight in 1966, 2006 and 2022.

Spain are looking progress beyond this stage for the first time since they won the competition in 2010 – having exited the 2014 edition at the Group Stage then lost at this stage in 2018 and 22 editions.

Portugal have no fresh injury concerns after their 2-1 comeback victory over Croatia in the Round of 32.

Spain could be without Nico Williams (groin/adductor) and Yeremy Pino (shoulder) after the pair sat out their 3-0 Round of 32 win over Austria.

• Portugal are yet to beat Spain in two previous meetings at World Cup Finals (D1, L1), having lost 1-0 in 2010 then drew 3-3 in 2018.
• Spain have never lost to Portugal in a World Cup across Qualifying and Finals formats (W4, D2).
• No Portugal player has drawn more fouls than Nuno Mendes at this tournament (11).
• Mikel Oyarzabal has been involved in five of Spain’s seven goals at this tournament – having produced four goals and one assist in four appearances.

 

Prediction

Having battled past Croatia in a tricky tie, Portugal now need to be at their absolute top form because this isn’t an easy test for a team who haven’t exactly clicked at the levels they’re capable of, except for that ruthless win over Uzbekistan in the Group Stage.

Spain meanwhile can’t get complacent because whilst they’re yet to concede a goal at this edition, this is their first proper top-quality test in terms of opposition but they must focus on themselves after a dominant clinical win over Austria.

Now if they do that and Portugal don’t turn out a proper top performance then I can see them winning this but their clean sheet record will probably go though.
