Ipswich Town have signed midfielder, Kalvin Phillips on a season-long loan from Manchester City.
A difficult start to last season saw Phillips fall down Man City’s pecking order with just four appearances, of which he started just one match in which he scored his sole goal of the campaign away at Red Star Belgrade.
The 28 year-old then spent the second half of last season on loan at West Ham, where he only managed four appearances with minimal impact – aside from a red card in a 2-0 loss to Nottingham Forest in February 2024.
Following his return for pre-season, City decided to send Phillips on a season-long loan to guarantee regular game time, with Ipswich successfully securing the midfielder with no buy clauses in the loan deal.
Speaking to TownTV about his loan switch, Phillips admitted that he was “very happy” to complete the move following “great” discussions with his new teammates and manager.
Phillips also spoke of his targets for the season as he added: “I want to play as many games as possible, enjoy playing football again and help the team win as many games as possible in the Premier League.”
Manager, Kieran McKenna is “very happy” to sign Phillips who he believes will bring experience and quality.
“He is of course a high-calibre, experienced midfielder who has played at the highest levels of the game, in both club and international football.
“Kalvin has much to offer us in terms of his qualities both on and off the ball, and he is a really humble and likeable character.
“He has been a key member of a newly-promoted team in the Premier League before and of course made a big impression for Leeds United during that period.”
McKenna added that he is keen to help Phillips rediscover his best form despite his wealth of experience.
“Like all players who come here we want to try and help them improve, whether that’s a younger player or one with more experience.
“That’s a big part of our culture and we’re sure Kalvin can make some big steps with us to help him and the Club have a really positive season.”
Phillips began his career at Leeds where he scored 14 goals in 234 appearances before he joined Man City in July 2022, but only managed one goal in 31 appearances.
The midfielder though helped City to Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League titles in 2022-23 season, plus 2023 UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup whilst he was an unused substitute in their Community Shield success last weekend.
