2023-24 Premier League: Week 25 Roundup

Roundup of latest Premier League action as the title race continued to heat up, whilst there was movement in the fight for survival.

Liverpool entered this round looking to keep Manchester City and Arsenal at bay in the title race, whilst their Merseyside neighbours – Everton battled alongside teams like Luton and Nottingham Forest for their top-flight status at the foot of the table.

Mohamed Salah scored on his return from a hamstring injury as Liverpool thrashed Brentford 4-1 at the Gtech Community Stadium, with Darwin Nunez, Alexis Mac Allister and Cody Gakpo also on the scoresheet despite Ivan Toney’s consolatory rebound strike for the Bees.

Bukayo Saka scored twice as Arsenal thrashed second-bottom Burnley to go second with a 5-0 win at Turf Moor, in which Martin Odegaard, Leandro Trossard and Kai Havertz also found the net.

Rodri rescued Manchester City a 1-1 draw at home to Chelsea despite Pep Guardiola’s Cityzens’ slip to third, after the Blues had taken a half-time lead through a counter-attack strike from ex City player – Raheem Sterling.

Ollie Watkins’ brace saw Aston Villa beat Fulham 2-1 at Craven Cottage to move back up to fourth despite Rodrigo Muniz’s clinical punishment of a defensive mix-up between Emiliano Martinez and Clement Lenglet.

Sheffield United remain rock bottom following a brutal 5-0 home loss to Brighton in which Mason Holgate was red carded for a reckless tackle, before Facuno Buonanotte and Danny Welbeck put the Seagulls ahead prior to Jack Robinson’s own-goal and Simon Adingra’s brace.

Rasmus Højlund’s quick-fire brace in the opening seven minutes proved enough for Manchester United to win 2-1 at Luton, despite Carlton Morris’ 14th minut header having offered the Hatters belief in an eventual futile comeback attempt.

Everton consequently took advantage of Luton’s defeat to climb out of the relegation zone after Amadou Onana’s header rescued the Toffees a 1-1 draw at home to Crystal Palace, after Jordan Ayew had put the Eagles in front mere hours after Roy Hodgson quit as manager.

Joao Gomes’ brace proved enough for Wolves to claim a 2-1 away win and achieve the league double over Tottenham, despite of Dejan Kulusevski’s early second-half equaliser.

Taiwo Awoniyi and Callum Hudson-Odoi struck in injury-time of both halves respectively as Nottingham Forest beat West Ham 2-0 at the City Ground, as the visiting Hammers finished with 10 men after Kalvin Phillips was sent off in the 71st minute.

Matt Ritchie’s injury-time equaliser saw Newcastle snatch a 2-2 draw at home to Bournemouth after Dominic Solankle and Antoine Semenyo had put the Cherries ahead either side of Anthony Gordon’s equalising penalty.

Second-half goals from Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo, Luis Diaz and Harvey Elliott saw Liverpool come from behind to beat Luton 4-1 at Anfield, after Chiedozie Ogbene headed the Hatters into a shock 12th minute lead.

Erling Haaland struck a 71st minute winner in a 1-0 home win over Brentford to lift Man City up to second in the table, albeit four points off Liverpool.
