James Milner and Danny Welbeck have signed contract extensions at Brighton & Hove Albion.

Milner has signed an one-year contract extension which was included in his initial one-year deal when he joined from Liverpool on a free transfer last summer.

The 38 year-old has made 20 appearances in his first season for the Seagulls due to various injuries but he is eager to bounce back next season.

“I am as driven as I’ve ever been and I’m excited for next season. I really enjoyed the first half of this season as the club played in Europe for the first time while the second half has personally been disappointing with a couple of injuries, but I will be ready for the start of next season.”

Welbeck meanwhile joined from Brighton in October 2020 from Watford and has gone on to score 25 goals and contribute eight assists in 123 appearances, during which he helped Brighton last season achieve European qualification for the first time in their history.

The 33 year-old forward has signed a two-year contract extension until June 2026 and is proud of his contributions to the team’s progress since he arrived.

“I’ve had an amazing time. Each season has been special and we’ve progressed every year. This season has been very difficult with the Europa League commitments. The fixture list has been different, but it’s been a great step.

“A couple more key acquisitions for the squad will help us push on next season and I am pretty sure we can achieve some more special moments.”

Head Coach, Roberto De Zerbi is “delighted” to retain Milner and Welbeck following Adam Lallana’s decision to leave at the end of this season.

Explaining the importance of these contract extensions for the team, De Zerbi added: “Their qualities as footballers and also as individuals are very clear for everyone to see, so this is very good news for us.

“They have both been very important for the club on and off the pitch, and with Adam Lallana leaving us their contribution becomes even more crucial next season.”
