Newcastle United have signed left-back, Lewis Hall from Chelsea on a season-long loan, with obligation to buy next summer.
Hall is Newcastle’s fourth senior signing of this summer’s transfer window after Sandro Tonali, Harvey Barnes and Tino Livramento, as Eddie Howe’s Magpies seek to strengthen the squad with view to challenging for silverware across four competitions this season.
The 18 year-old’s move also sees him join his boyhood club despite having been born and raised in Slough, with his father having been born in the North East and passed his allegiance onto his children who are Newcastle fans.
Hall even made his Premier League debut for Chelsea away to Newcastle in a 1-0 defeat in November 2022, in what was their final match prior to the 2022 FIFA World Cup break last season.
Newcastle have paid an initial £28m transfer fee on a season-long loan with a mandatory option to buy in June 2024, whilst £7m of performance related add-ons could see the total fee rise to £35m if various clauses are met.
Speaking about his decision to join Newcastle where he will wear the number 20 shirt, Hall commented: “I’m very proud. Me and my family are Newcastle fans, and for me and my brother growing up, it was drilled into us that we were Newcastle. It’s a big club and I can’t wait to get started.
“I got a lot of experience last year in some big fixtures and I was really proud of the way I progressed as a player and a person. To now be here at Newcastle, the club that I’ve supported since I was a kid, I’m honoured and very proud to wear this shirt.”
Hall also reflected upon the Magpies’ progress under Howe as he added: “It’s very exciting. When you look back on last season and the way the team performed – not just the results, but the performances the team were putting in – it was amazing.
“There’s so many talented players and we’ve got the Champions League now as well so there’s many different competitions that I know the team will be wanting to do well in, and hopefully get a trophy or two as well.”
Howe added that he is “delighted” to sign Hall who will add “quality, versatility and high potential to our squad.”
Hall has left Chelsea with no goals in 12 senior appearances, having made his senior debut during the Blues’ 5-1 Third Round win over Chesterfield in 2021-22 FA Cup during which he provided an assist for their third goal, as Chelsea eventually finished runners-up in that season’s competition.
Howe could hand Hall his debut for Newcastle on Sunday 27 August, as the Magpies host Liverpool at St James’ Park in a 4:30pm BST kick-off live on Sky Sports.
