Newcastle United have signed defender, Tino Livramento from Southampton for £40m.
Livramento’s switch to Newcastle will see the 20 year-old remain in the Premier League for a third consecutive season, despite having made only two appearances for Southampton at end of last season after a 13-month lay-off with an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury.
Southampton’s relegation at the end of last season to the Championship however meant that several clubs expressed interest in signing Livramento, who had impressed across 2021-22 season prior to his ACL injury in a 2-2 draw against Brighton in April 2022.
One of the reported clubs interested clubs was Livramento’s former team, Chelsea who were keen to activate their buy-back and sell-on clauses on the fullback, which was thought to be between £35-38m but Newcastle instead agreed a £40m fee in total for Livramento.
As part of the agreed £40m payment, Newcastle have paid an initial £32m fee which is followed by a further £8m in add-ons to meet Southampton’s £40m valuation, with Livramento having signed a five-year contract on Tyneside until June 2028.
Speaking about his decision to join Newcastle, Livramento commented: “I’m really excited to have signed for Newcastle United and I’m looking forward to playing in front of the fans.
“I was here for the games over the weekend; even though they were friendlies, there were so many fans and they were still so loud so I can’t wait to see what it feels like to play in front of them in a Premier League or Champions League game.
“The way the manager plays football is really attractive and I feel like it suits me as a player. And with how well the team did last season, the trajectory that we’re on now, I’m just looking forward to being a part of that.”
The 20 year-old also spoke of wishing to learn how to “become a better player and a better full-back” from fellow full-back, Kieran Trippier.
Manager, Eddie Howe added: “Tino is a very talented young player with an exciting future ahead of him so we are delighted to sign him.
“At 20, he already has lots of attributes that I admire but he also has the potential and drive to really grow with this team. I’m looking forward to working with him and to seeing him develop in a Newcastle shirt.”
Livramento leaves Southampton having scored one goal in 34 appearances across two seasons at St Mary’s Stadium, and could make his competitive debut for Newcastle at home to Aston Villa on 11 August in a 5:30pm BST kick-off live on Sky Sports.
The 20 year-old also is Newcastle’s third signing of this summer’s transfer window following the captures of Sandro Tonali and Harvey Barnes from AC Milan and Leicester respectively.
