Preston North End has signed defender, Jack Whatmough on a free transfer from Wigan Athletic.

Whatmough terminated his contract at Wigan due to repeated contract breaches under the Latics’ previous ownership, having made 86 appearances in two seasons.

Preston consequently swooped for Whatmough on a free transfer on a three-year deal until June 2026.

Speaking about his decision to join Preston, Whatmough commented: “I’m over the moon. From the first moment I knew there was interest it was something that I wanted to get done as soon as possible. I’m really happy that it’s done.

“I just had a conversation with the gaffer there and I’m just looking forward to training now with the lads and starting the season and seeing where it can take us.”

Preston will mark Whatmough’s second campaign with a Championship level club and he is excited to experience life in the second-tier again, as he added: “No matter what level you’re at you want to test yourself and prove to people that you’re worthy of being at that level, and that’s what I want to do.”

Manager, Ryan Lowe added that he is “really pleased” that Whatmough has joined the club after fending off interest from rival clubs.

Lowe also iterated that Whatmough will add quality and competition in defence, as he explained: “He’s a footballing centre half who can play out from the back with a good range of passing and most importantly he’s a solid defender.

“He’s got plenty of experience and he adds to our competition in the backline which is what we want ultimately.”

Whatmough could make his debut for Preston away at Bristol City on Saturday 5 August in a 3pm BST kick-off, with his home bow at Deepdale potentially set for 8 August against Salford City in the Carabao Cup.
