Defender, Levi Colwill has signed a new six-year contract at Chelsea, with option for a further year.

Colwill had been the subject of transfer speculation this summer with Brighton keen to sign him on a permanent transfer, after he impressed in 22 appearances on loan with the Seagulls last season en-route to a sixth-placed Premier League finish.

Chelsea however have swooped to tie him down to a new six-year contract until June 2029, with an option to extend by a further year until June 2030 depending on his progress across the coming seasons.

“It’s always been an easy decision,” commented Colwill upon his decision to sign a new contract.

Chelsea’s new manager, Mauricio Pochettino meanwhile had been eager for Colwill to stay amidst transfer speculation and the Blues’ poor record in graduation of youth players into their senior team.

Addressing any fears about being a fringe player at Chelsea, Colwill added: “I’ve spoken with the manager and he’s given me reassurance, that trust I needed. He’s spoken with me not just as a player but a person. It’s made a big difference.”

Chelsea’s Co-Sporting Directors, Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley iterated that Colwill “is an outstanding player who has risen to every challenge in his career so far.”

The pair went on to add that the club are “thrilled” to tie Colwill down to a long-term contract as they praised his professionalism, as they said: “His journey from academy to first team is testament to his talent, dedication, and determination.

“Everyone at the club is now looking forward to watching him thrive at Stamford Bridge in the seasons ahead.”

This season will see Colwill finally set for his senior debut at Chelsea after he spent the last two seasons on loan at Huddersfield and Brighton, and played a role in England Under-23s’ success at this summer’s UEFA Under-21s Euros.
