Arsenal have signed forward, Cloe Lacasse from Benfica on a free transfer.

Lacasse’s move to North London comes after four seasons with Benfica where she scored 100 goals in 129 appearances, during which she helped the Portuguese club to three Campeonato Nacional Feminino and Taca da Liga Feminina titles apiece.

Lacasse also helped Benfica clinch the Portuguese Women’s Super Cup twice; in 2019 and 2022 respectively.

“I’m super excited and enthusiastic to get started here,” commented Lacasse who proceeded to explain that she wants to fight for success. “I feel ready mentally and physically to be able to contribute here and win titles and I feel that this club has everything it takes to compete for the highest honours.

“I want to go to the next level and score goals here for Arsenal.”

Arsenal Women’s Head Coach, Jonas Eidevall added that he is “really pleased” to secure a strong player like Lacasse, who will “strengthen” Arsenal’s attack next season.

Acknowleding Lacasse’s success across Iceland’s IBV plus Benfica, Eidevall added: “Cloe is a proven goalscorer and has shown her quality over a number of seasons in two European leagues as well as the Champions League.

“She will add a different dimension to our attacking game and I’m looking forward to working with her.”

Arsenal’s Head of Women’s Football, Clare Wheatley meanwhile revealed that the club had been scouting Lacasse for a period of time, so is “delighted” to finally bring the 29 year-old Canadian international to Arsenal.

Wheatley also praised Lacasse for her impressive goal-scoring record at club level with 173 goals in 242 appearances in total across her time at IBV and Benfica, as she added: “Cloe’s record is very impressive and we believe she has the right qualities to slot straight into our playing style here at Arsenal.

“I’m sure our supporters will be excited to see Cloe in the red and white.”

Lacasse represents Canada in international football where she has scored just one goal in 19 appearances, and is currently part of a pre World Cup training camp, with Canada’s final squad for 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup set to be announced on 9 July.
