Brentford have signed defender, Ji-Soo Kim from K League Two’s Seongnam for an undisclosed transfer fee.
Kim joins the Bees with 19 senior club appearances to his name following his graduation through Seongnam’s youth academy into their senior team, having made his debut for the South Korean club in January 2022.
Brentford have opted to place Kim within their B-team for this season and the 18 year-old will link up with his new teammates and staff this week, as the B-team squad return for pre-season preparations on Thursday.
Kim completed his medical last week and has since signed a four-year contract until June 2027, with Brentford holding an option to extend his contract by a further season until June 2028 if Kim impresses across the course of his time at the club.
Brentford’s Director of Football, Phil Giles described Kim as “an excellent prospect” who they are pleased to sign, having fought off competition from various teams across Europe to secure his signature following his exploits to help South Korea finish fourth at 2023 FIFA Under-20s World Cup.
Giles proceeded to reflect upon Kim’s involvement in South Korea’s Under-20s World Cup run, as he added: “He performed very well at the U20 World Cup recently so it’s a great credit to Lee Dykes and the recruitment team that we managed to sign him.”
Giles has also urged patience with Kim as he explained: “We will give Ji-soo all the time he needs to learn English, adapt to life in England and grow into our club in the B team, and like all of our B-team players he will earn the opportunity to train and play with the first team based on his performances.”
Kim also has previously faced Premier League opposition after he featured in K League All-Stars against Tottenham Hotspur in July 2022, which the South Korean side lost 6-3 in front of 64,100 spectators.
