Newcastle United Women will become the first professional club to play in the FA Women’s National League.
The Magpies’ decision to go full-time comes after they clinched promotion from FA Women’s National League Divion One – North last season, albeit on goal difference ahead of Durham Cestria.
Newcastle’s Head of Women’s Football, Su Cumming will continue to lead the women’s side of the club alongside Head Coach, Becky Langley, with the club aiming for Women’s Super League as they become the first club outside of the top two divisions to become a professional team.
Speaking about Newcastle’s move to go professional, Langley described the decision as ‘a monumental moment’ for the club and FA Women’s National League, with hope of being ‘a leading light’ in women’s football move towards professional clubs.
Langley also vowed to help the playing squad progress in their individual development, as she said: “We have worked incredibly hard to get here and I’m so excited to work with the players as we help them to be the best athletes they can be.”
Newcastle also confirmed that players will receive ‘competitive salaries,’ and regular training with use of professional equipment plus medical facilities.
Home matches will also continue to be played at Kingston Park although it is possible that at least one match could take place at St James’ Park across next season.
Newcastle CEO, Darren Eales added that the women’s side of the club going professional is a huge statement of intent beyond local impact, as he explained: “This is an historic moment for our Newcastle United family and for the women’s game regionally, nationally and beyond.
“Newcastle United Women is a hugely important part of our vision for the club, and this is the right step at the right time as we strive for sustainable success.
“I’d like to thank our owners for their incredible support and congratulate Su, Becky and all the players and staff for their achievements so far. We look forward to the exciting journey ahead.”
Newcastle’s Sporting Director, Dan Ashworth added that ensuring that both the men’s and women’s teams are successful “is an integral part of our sporting objectives and we are delighted to support the team’s progress by building a professional model around them.”
Ashworth proceeded to praise Langley and her squad as he added: “Becky and the players have shown incredible dedication, and turning full-time will enable them to fully concentrate on their careers and the next chapter of Newcastle United Women as fully supported professionals.”
