Swansea City have appointed Michael Duff as Head Coach on a three-year contract until June 2026.

Duff’s move comes just one year after he took charge of Barnsley and led the Tykes to last season’s League One Play-Off Final, where they suffered a heartbreaking loss to Sheffield Wednesday in injury-time of extra-time to miss out on an instant promotion back to the Championship.

Swansea subsequently approached Barnsley and negotiated a deal to release Duff from his three-year contract at Oakwell, in order to allow the 45 year-old to become their new Head Coach on a three-year contract until June 2026.

“We need that one team mentality; the players, staff, fans, and board. Everyone needs to pull in the same direction because that’s the only way you’re going to achieve success,” commented Duff who played for Cheltenham Town and Burnley across his playing career.

Duff has experienced seven promotions acros his time as a player and manager, so iterated that he knows how to help Swansea return to the top-flight, as he said: “I’ve had seven promotions in my career as a player and manager so I know what an environment should look and smell like.

“I want to play good football and I know that there is an expectation of that at this football club, but it’s about evolving it, moving it and being a bit more on the front foot and a bit more progressive at times.

“It’s about getting the balance of all those things because ultimately it’s a winning business. You’ve got to win.”

Duff also spoke of coming to the club with his “eyes wide open” in terms of following in the footsteps of previous managers, but has vowed to stick to his “aggressive and in your face,” style of play with hard pressing.

The 45 year-old also believes that he is capable of fighting for promotion with the current squad amidst some fresh reinforcement in this summer’s transfer window, but added: “Everyone needs to be pulling in the same direction. Everything is about the team.”

On his immediate plans heading into pre-season, Duff explained: “My immediate aims are to get a helicopter view of the landscape and the players, physically and mentally. What do they look like? What is their attitude like? And that’s the same for all the staff too.

“Ultimately, we want to walk out of pre-season with a fit group of players who are fresh.”

Duff also is “excited” to meet Swansea supporters but iterated that the fans must play their part as the 12th man, as he continued: “We need the supporters as much as they need us and if we both turn up every week, then hopefully we’ll get more wins than losses.”

Swansea Chairman, Andy Coleman meanwhile praised Duff’s “proven track record of galvanising a group of players into a collective unit, and he has consistently outperformed expectations at his previous clubs,” in his career.

Coleman also iterated belief that Duff’s experience and winning attitude will benefit the squad as he added: “He is a proven winner, both as a player and as a manager, and I’m confident he will bring that mentality here.

“I believe in his ability and his belief in the Swansea Way, while he also possesses the capability to adapt within games to drive results.”

On Duff’s targets for this season, Coleman iterated: “This is a results driven business. Our position in the table matters to all of us and we are focused on supporting Michael with everything he needs to succeed.”

Duff replaces Russell Martin who left the Swans yesterday (21 June) to take up the managerial role at Southampton, with both clubs set to meet at St Mary’s Stadium on Boxing Day before Swansea host the Saints on weekend of 19-22 January.

“Immense Pride”

Duff also issued an open farewell statement for Barnsley fans in which he thanked the players and board for their “immense support”, as he added that he “loved every minute” at Oakwell with “immense pride” at last season’s journey to Wembley.

He also iterated that despite rumours linking him to other clubs during the run-in, he ensured that his “focus did not waver from Barnsley”, in their ultimately heartbreaking failed promotion bid.

Explaining his decision to move to Swansea, Duff was honest as he commented: “This decision was not money-orientated.

“The board at Barnsley did everything in their power to make me commit to the club on an extended contract, but I am an ambitious character and after taking stock in the summer felt that this opportunity was the next natural step in my career.”

Duff also expressed hope that he had left Barnsley “in a better place than when I found it.”

Barnsley Chairman, Neerav Parekh placed on record the board’s thanks to Duff for “his efforts over the last year”, whilst praising his attitude towards their negotiations with Swansea over his release clause and “wish him all the best in his future endeavours.”

Parekh also moved to provide reassurance for fans that their search for a new Head Coach has already commenced, with view to quickly making an announcement in the near-future to maximise pre-season as players return to training on 26 June.

Allaying any fears over the impact of Duff’s departure, Parekh added: “The foundations laid down at the start of last summer ensure that we’re able to compete, and regardless of departures, the club is bigger than any one individual.

“We promise to continue to build on the positive progress we’ve made and challenge again next season, to push for promotion back to our natural home in the Championship.”
