Arsenal and Manchester City continue to sit atop of the Premier League following a busy midweek round of top-flight action.
Arsenal and Manchester City who occupied the top two spots at start of this match week respectively weren’t in action, due to Arsenal’s participation in a rescheduled Europa League tie against PSV Eindhoven, which Mikel Arteta’s Gunners won 1-0 to secure a knockout spot.
Tottenham missed a chance to go second after suffering a 2-0 defeat at fifth-placed Manchester United, in which Fred and Bruno Fernandes delivered second-half strikes for the Red Devils.
Chelsea remain fourth after Graham Potter’s Blues dug deep to extend their unbeaten run in all competitions to seven matches, having battled to a goalless draw at Brentford.
Newcastle sit sixth again after Miguel Almiron curled in a 31st minute winner from 25 yards to defeat Everton in a dominant display.
Down in the relegation zone, Leicester moved off the foot of the table with a 2-0 home win against Leeds United through Robin Koch’s own goal and Harvey Barnes’ strike in the first half.
Forest consequently slipped to rock bottom after having held Brighton to a goalless draw despite being totally outplayed.
Wolves slipped back to third-bottom following a 2-1 defeat at Crystal Palace, as Eberechi Eze and Wilfried Zaha’s second-half goals secured a comeback win for Palace after Adama Traore had nodded the West-Midlands visitors ahead in the 31st minute.
Following their defeat, Wolves also confirmed that Steve Davis will remain in interim charge until 2023, in order to allow the club to conduct a thorough recruitment process for a new permanent manager.
Elsewhere, Che Adams’ ninth minute glanced header proved enough to lift Southampton out of the relegation zone with a 1-0 victory at Bournemouth.
Darwin Nunez headed in a 22nd minute winner as Liverpool defeated West Ham in a scrappy encounter at Anfield, in which Jarrod Bowen missed a penalty after Virgil van Dijk had scrubbed the penalty spot prior to the England international’s spot kick.
Finally, Tyrone Mings’ own goal coupled with goals from Harrison Reed and Aleksandar Mitrovic saw ten-men Aston Villa lose 3-0 at Fulham, whilst Douglas Luiz was red carded for a foul on Mitrovic which ultimately culminated in Villa sacking Steven Gerrard as manager post-match.
