2022-23 Premier League: Week 12 – Tottenham vs Newcastle

Tottenham Hotspur welcome Newcastle United to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in a top of table clash.

Victory would see Tottenham stay third but move level on points with second-placed Manchester City, whilst Newcastle can go fourth with a win.

Dejan Kulusevski could return for Tottenham following his recovery from a muscle injury.

Emerson Royal (suspension) is also set to be back in contention but Richarlision (calf) remains absent.

Newcastle could be without Joelinton after the Brazilian forward suffered a knock in Wednesday’s win over Everton at home.

Allan Saint-Maximin (hamstring), Karl Darlow (ankle), Emil Krafth (knee), Matt Ritchie (calf) and Alexander Isak (muscle) remain absent.

Stat Attack

  • Tottenham are unbeaten in nine of their last 10 league meetings against Newcastle (W7, D2, L1).
  • Newcastle have claimed four points from their last five visits to Tottenham (W1, D1, L3).
  • Spurs’ Son Heung-min scored in both appearances against Newcastle last season (W2).
  • Harry Kane has scored in four of Spurs’ five home matches in the Premier League this season (W4).
  • Each of Newcastle’s two away clean sheets this season have occurred in goalless draws – against Brighton and Manchester United respectively.

Prediction

Following a lacklustre away effort in their defeat at Man Utd, Tottenham will be relieved to be back home where they’re yet to lose this season, although they need a huge improvement here because they lacked urgency and energy in midweek creativity except for Hugo Lloris in goal.

Newcastle meanwhile were in absolute cruise control against Everton with fantastic aggressive attacking play and awareness in movement when under pressure, whilst their defending was spot on amidst wasted chances up front.

Eddie Howe’s Magpies though will know how strong Spurs are at home so they really must start on the front foot like in midweek, displaying urgency and bravery in their attacks and defend well throughout if they’re to stand any chance of springing a surprise.

Tottenham though do have the quality to immediately bounce back so I do expect goals here but if Newcastle can get in front, this is a huge opportunity for them to climb to fourth and I feel like they could take this given their momentum.

Prediction: Tottenham 1-2 Newcastle

Result: Tottenham 1-2 Newcastle
