2022-23 Premier League: Week Six Roundup

Arsenal remain top of the Premier League on a weekend marred by VAR controversies across several matches.

Marcus Rashford’s brace ended league leaders, Arsenal’s unbeaten start as Manchester United won 3-1 at Old Trafford, after Antony’s debut goal was cancelled out by Bukayo Saka whilst Arsenal saw an early opener denied by VAR.

Manchester City moved to within one point behind Arsenal in second following a 1-1 draw away at Aston Villa, who had fought back to snatch a point as Leon Bailey’s equaliser cancelled out Erling Haaland’s 50th minute volley.

Goals from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Harry Kane saw Tottenham Hotspur defeat London rivals, Fulham 2-1 in North London to sit third for a third consecutive matchweek, despite Aleksandar Mitrovic’s late consolatory goals for the Cottagers.

Alexis Mac Allister’s late brace completed a dramatic 5-2 comeback victory for fourth-placed Brighton over rock-bottom Leicester, who had initially taken a first-minute lead before Patson Daka’s equaliser then made it 2-2 at half-time in a game full of VAR controversies.

Down in the relegation zone, Nottingham Forest slipped to second-bottom after blowing a 2-0 half-time lead at home, as their fellow newly promoted rivals – Bournemouth staged a second-half comeback to win 3-2 with Dominic Solanke providing a goal and assist for the visitors.

West Ham controversially returned to the relegation zone following a late 2-1 defeat at Chelsea, having led through Michail Antonio until Ben Chilwell provided the equaliser then assist in Kai Havertz’s winner, only for Maxwel Cornet’s equalising strike to be disallowed by VAR.

Wolves climbed out of the bottom three after Daniel Podence struck a first-half injury-time winner from Matheus Nunes’ pass to beat Southampton at Molineux.

Elsewhere, Ivan Toney’s hat-trick fired Brentford to a dramatic 5-2 home victory over Leeds United with Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa completing the win, whilst Leeds manager – Jesse Marsch was sent to the stands following a clash over VAR with referee – Robert Jones.

Newcastle United were harshly held to a goalless draw against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park after Tyrick Mitchell’s own goal was disallowed, after Joe Willock was adjudged to had fouled Palace goalkeeper – Vincente Guaita despite getting pushed into him by Mitchell.

Finally, Everton held Liverpool to a goalless draw at Goodison Park after Conor Coady’s effort for the Toffees was disallowed, whilst both Jordan Pickford and Alisson made crucial saves.
