Manchester City have signed Laia Aleixandri on a free transfer from Atletico Madrid on a three-year contract until June 2025.
Aleixandri began her career as a defender at Barcelona as part of their Academy and B-team squad between 2012-17, but switched to Atletico Madrid two years later.
The 21 year-old however has now decided to move on and will officially become a Man City Women player n 1 July, following expiration of her contract at Atletico.
“I am very happy to be here and to be a part of this amazing Club – I am very excited for what is to come,” commented Aleixandri as she spoke to mancity.com about her move.
Aleixandri went on to iterate that she feels that she is moving to a big club with a possession based style which suits her style, as she explained: “Manchester City is a very big club with top players and staff, and I believe this is the best move for me to make.
“This is a team who likes to play with the ball and with an offensive style, and that suits me personally.”
With English football offering opportunities to achieve a domestic treble of Women’s Super League, Women’s FA Cup and Women’s League Cup, Aleixandri also believes that she can challenge for lot of trophies and still improve as a player.
Explaining what her ambitions in English football will be, the 21 year-old defender said: “My dream here is to win a lot of titles and to improve as a player with the help of my new team-mates.”
Man City Women manager, Gareth Taylor believes that Aleixandri’s arrival marks “a real coup for us as a Club,” given her talent and experience.
Taylor went on to note that at just 21 years-old, Aleixandri has the experience and ability to go far as he added: “Even though she is only 21, she has an incredible amount of experience under her belt for both club and country so far and it is so exciting to think about what is to come from her in the future.
“She is a player who is hungry to learn and grow, and she will certainly have the opportunity to do that here at City with the team she will have around her.”
The 21 year-old has also established herself in the Spain Women National Team squad since 2019 with two goals in 10 international appearances.
Aleixandri will also be reunited with Deyna Castellanos who last week confirmed that she will also depart Atletico for Man City this summer.
