Darren Carter has been appointed as manager of Birmingham City Women on a two-year contract until June 2024.

Carter had served as interim manager since November 2021 after taking over from Tony Elliott, who had been in interim charge himself for a few days following Scott Booth’s sacking in mid-November after a poor run of form.

The 38 year-old ex Birmingham City player however was unable to prevent the club from suffering relegation from the FA Women’s Super League in early May, following a 6-0 loss at Manchester City although all five wins across all competitions this season came under Carter’s management.

Speaking to BCFC.com about his decision to sign a permanent contract as the Blues prepare for life in the FA Women’s Championship, Carter said: “This is where is home for me. My full focus is driving this team back to where it belongs and back in the Women’s Super League.

“We want to be competing at the top level, and that is the drive for us now. My drive and passion for this team has only got stronger.”

Birmingham City Women’s General Manager, Sarah Westwood added that the club are “delighted” to retain Carter on a now permanent contract until June 2024.

Westwood also acknowledged Carter’s experience of the club as a former player for the men’s team between 2002-05 has benefitted the current women’s squad, as she added: “Darren knows what it means to play for Birmingham City, and we have already seen that passed onto the players during the second-half of last season.”

Despite the Blues taking just five wins in 18 matches under Carter’s reign, Westwood is confident that this contract renewal will encourage fans to get behind him and the squad as she concluded: “Darren’s ambitions match that of the Club and we are excited to enter this new period with him in charge.

“We want the fans to continue to support Darren and the team as we look towards a successful season in the FA Women’s Championship.”
