A Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital led consortium have completed a £4.25bn takeover of Chelsea from Roman Abramovich.
Completion of this takeover deal comes almost three months after Abramovich commenced the sale process, due to his position as owner becoming untenable amidst his links to Russian President – Vladimir Putin following Russia’s attack on Ukraine with UK consequently sanctioning Abramovich.
Boehly and Clearlake Capital will lead the consortium with other financial backers including;
- Hansjorg Wyss – Founder of Wyss Foundation
- Mark Walter – Co-founder and CEO of Guggenheim
Boehly and Walter are both owners of various Los Angles sporting team – Dodgers (Baseball), Lakers and Sparks (both Basketball).
Boehly though will share joint control and governance of Chelsea with Clearlake, with the 48 year-old serving as Chairman of the holding company as both parties committed to providing increased investment across Chelsea’s senior Men and Women teams as well as the Academy plus Stamford Bridge and Kingsmeadow.
Boehly and Clearlake also clarified that the work of the Chelsea Foundation will be continued as normal with focus centred upon providing football and education to the local community, as well as international works and efforts to tackle discrimination.
Feeling “honoured to become the new custodians” of Chelsea, Boehly has iterated that the consortium are committed to the club long-term as he explained: “We’re all in – 100% — every minute of every match. Our vision as owners is clear: we want to make the fans proud.
“Along with our commitment to developing the youth squad and acquiring the best talent, our plan of action is to invest in the Club for the long-term and build on Chelsea’s remarkable history of success.”
Clearlake co-founders and managing partners, Behdad Eghbali and Jose E. Feliciano added that they’re “excited” to become joint-owners of Chelsea, as they described the Blues as “an engine for football talent development.”
Eghbali and E. Feliciano also praised British authorities for their efforts to help complete the deal but added that they’re “thrilled” to partner with Boehly, Wyss and Walter in order to further grow the club.
The manging partners proceeded to address supporters in terms of financial investment as they said: “Together, we will expand the Club’s investment across infrastructure, technology, and sports science to support the incredible Chelsea football and commercial teams – all with the goal of leveraging this growth to fuel even more on-pitch success.”
Chelsea have confirmed that all required necessary approvals for the takeover from the UK Government, Premier League and other authorities have been completed with success.
With new owners now in place, Chelsea will now discover their 2022-23 Premier League fixture list at 9am BST on Thursday 16 June.
