2021-22 Premier League: Week 11 – Man Utd v Man City

Manchester United welcome Manchester City to Old Trafford in a blockbuster Manchester derby as both teams look to continue their title challenges.

Victory would see Man Utd stay fifth unless they record a massive victory of five goals or more which could lift them as high as third, whereas a win would see Man City climb to second until Sunday teatime at minimum.

Raphael Varane is ruled out for Man Utd after suffering a hamstring injury in Tuesday’s Champions League draw at Atalanta, on what marked his return from a groin injury.

Victor Lindelof (knock) is a doubt but Paul Pogba (suspension) is ruled out.

Man City will be without Aymeric Laporte as the Spanish defender serves his domestic one match ban after being red carded in last weekend’s loss to Crystal Palace.

Kyle Walker (foot) is a doubt after Wednesday’s Champions League win over Club Brugge but Ferran Torres (foot), Liam Delap (ankle) and Benjamin Mendy (personal) are still ruled out indefinitely.

Stat Attack

  • Man Utd have lost two of their last six league meetings against Man City (W3, D1, L2).
  • Man City are unbeaten in four of their last five league visits to Old Trafford (W3, D1, L1).
  • United have won two of their last three meetings against City by 2-0 results (W2, D1).
  • Cristiano Ronaldo has scored four goals from ten shots on target in seven league appearances for Utd this season.
  • City have gone 99 league matches since losing consecutive matches in the Premier League dating back to December 2018 (W77, D10, L12).

Prediction

Having delivered contrasting performances in their last three matches, United definitely are a difficult team to predict but if they adapt quickly like they did at Tottenham last weekend, they certainly will have the quality needed to trouble City and Ronaldo will always be a huge threat on the attack.

City meanwhile were uncharacteristically sloppy in defence last weekend against Crystal Palace as they struggled with Palace’s intensity, which would be impressive for Utd to match because I can see City dominating but finishing chances will be key here.

Add in Utd’s recent form in this fixture and City’s decent away form at Old Trafford then this is definitely a tough match to call, yet if Utd can show the same quality that we saw at Spurs then they could well snatch a win if are clinical enough given City’s recent slip in form.

Prediction: Manchester United 1-1 Manchester City

Result: Manchester United 0-2 Manchester City
