Sheffield Wednesday have sacked manager, Henrik Pedersen after a run of one win in six league matches.
Pedersen’s departure has ended his 15-month spell at Hillsborough in which he led the club through a difficult 2025-26 season, as several points deductions and a spell in administration saw them relegated from the Championship to League One.
He then oversaw a strong start to the season with four wins in their first five league matches – which included a 7-2 victory over newcomers, Bromley in August – which left them top of the table but a run of just six points from four of their last six league matches has seen them fall to eighth.
Club officials consequently opted to act and relieved Pedersen of his duties immediately, less than 24 hours after a 2-0 defeat at Yorkshire rivals – Doncaster Rovers, and released a statement thanking him for his contribution in a tough period for the club.
“Sheffield Wednesday Football Club confirms that Henrik Pedersen has left the club with immediate effect.
“Henrik led the first team through an exceptional period in the club’s history, providing stability and leadership during a time of significant uncertainty and change.
“The club would like to place on record its sincere thanks to Henrik for his contribution and wishes him every success in the future.”
Sheffield Wednesday’s Sporting Director, Simon Wilson added his thanks to Pedersen “… for his professionalism, commitment and contribution during an exceptionally challenging period for Sheffield Wednesday.”
Wilson proceeded to explain that the lack of development and consistency was behind the decision to sack Pedersen.
“We knew the start of this season would be difficult due to the scale of change across the club, but our expectation was always that we would develop as the season progressed, establishing a recognisable style of play and greater consistency in our performances.
“Although we have accumulated points, we haven’t seen enough progress in those areas. We believe making a change now gives us the best opportunity to establish those foundations and build towards the second half of the season and beyond.
“We remain ambitious about what we can achieve this campaign, and our focus remains on building a Sheffield Wednesday team with a clear identity, capable of delivering sustained improvement and long-term success.”
Across his 65 matches in charge at Hillsborough, Pedersen has recorded 10 wins, 17 draws and 38 defeats in all competitions.
Matt Hamshaw has been appointed as interim manager whilst the club recruits a new permanent manager.
