Bromley’s interim manager, Byron Webster feels that his team suffered a “cruel” 1-1 draw at home to Peterborough.

Michael Cheek’s 10th-minute strike fired Bromley in front until Vernon Masara rescued Peterborough a point with his 93rd-minute equaliser, which left the Posh still sat 21st in the League One table whilst Webster’s Ravens moved up to 22nd with two games in hand.

Webster post-match explained to BFC TV that whilst the late conceded goal was disappointing, he was proud of his players for their improved work rate and limiting Peterborough’s chances.

“Yeah it’s a cruel game isn’t it? We did well. Everything, me, Steve [Arias], Al [Alex Dyer], Brandon [Daly] asked of the boys and they did. I said in there, it’s crazy because we’re saying well done for working hard, but that’s a given.

“It’s always been a given, but the work rate today was impressive, very impressive. And when you work that hard, you get your chances and we had a fair few, and then we took a sucker punch at the end.”

“Yeah and that’s credit to the boys, but ruthless again, how I’m going to speak, that’s done. It’s gone now. We’ve done it, we can’t give ourselves too many pats on the back, we have got another game on Tuesday and we have to go again and that’s what the business is about.

“I just said in there, like even when you win, you don’t enjoy it because you move on to the next.

“You enjoy it for maybe half an hour in the changing room when you’re having a shower, you then get on, your missus asking you to put the dishes in the dishwater and the kids are screaming, you forget about it, we come into training tomorrow and we move on, and that’s what we have to do.”

Webster also spoke of the importance of setting the intensity in order to demoralise opponents and was pleased with the performance of his players in that aspect.

“I’m a big believer in you set the intensity, you set the tempo and I also believe it demoralises the opponent. If they see you running up and they’re thinking ‘God, I’m lucky to you’ it honestly demoralises them, and there were little things we said we wanted and like I said, the boys did it to a team.

With Storm Boelo rumbling across the UK, it brought strong winds to the CopperJax Community Stadium and Webster felt that it created “a game of two halves,” for both teams with a focus on quality clearances of the ball.

“Yeah we knew it was a game of two halves, so yeah, we knew with the wind, people think with the wind it’s a lot easier.

“Obviously the balls forward need to be on point, otherwise the run through to the opponent’s keeper and obviously the second half, you need to make sure your clearances are clean, your headers clean, and your passes are clean, because the wind holds it up and it can be hard, both for defenders and for the strikers.”

Webster also praised Cheek for netting his first League One goal and following his instructions, with their tactics built around allowing Cheek to be their main goal threat.

“He’s what he does, isn’t he? And obviously we were able to get him on the pitch, we went with two up there and yeah he’s effective. He knows what he’s good at.

“He’s my pal so I’m not going to address it off any other way, but yeah, he’s one of them that listen, he works so hard. They all work hard, and I’ve had to tell Cheeky ‘listen, stay away, let you be the goal score, that’s what we need.

“We will get people to get you the ball in the box, Mitch can get it in, Jodi, Michael, whoever it is they will get the ball to him, but if he’s trying to link it and he’s not in the box, that’s not what I want, and yeah Cheeky went back to being Cheeky.

“Selfish in some ways, which are what I’ve asked him to do, and yeah we will get the ball to you and make sure you score.”

With fans experiencing anger about the club’s decision to part company with Andy Woodman on Thursday (22 October), Webster was pleased at their ability to park the fury aside and get behind him and the team.

“No, not at all, been fantastic, but yeah again we give them something to be excited about and they hung onto it and they drived the zone, the singing, the drum, it was a good day except for the sucker punch at the end.”

Bromley now face a trip to MK Dons on Tuesday 27 October and Webster iterated that the team will be training as usual tomorrow and Monday ahead of that match.

“Yeah if you’re playing in the team, it’s good news. If you’re not, there will be a training session for them and they’ll be trying to get into the team. So yeah it’s going on to the next game and yeah, there’s no days off. It’s not like there’s no time to have days off.

“So yeah we’ll be thinking about MK Dons right later on.”
