Chelsea’s Emerson and Jorginho have been named in Italy’s 26-man squad for this summer’s rearranged Euro 2020 tournament.
Emerson and Jorginho were absent from Roberto Mancini’s preliminary squad after Chelsea reached this season’s UEFA Champions League Final, of which the Blues went on to win yesterday (30 May).
Mancini therefore named a preliminary 32-man squad for Friday’s (28 May) 7-0 friendly win over San Marino, before making six cuts as Emerson and Jorginho were called up to the provisional squad with a further two cuts made in the next 48 hours ahead in order to meet UEFA’s 26-player squad deadline on 1 June.
Cagliari’s Alessio Cragno consequently misses out in goal despite being the second oldest goalkeeper in the initial selection, as Gianluigi Donnarumma and Alex Meret get the nod alongside Torino’s Salvatore Sirigu.
Cristiano Biraghi, Gian Marco Ferrari and Gianluca Mancini have all been dropped from the defensive squad selection after failing to impress in the initial squad selections, as Emerson comes into the squad.
Gaetano Castrovilli of Fiorentina is the only snub in midfield as Jorginho replace him in the final roster, having initially been left out of the preliminary squad due to Chelsea’s Champions League commitment.
Matteo Pessina was also initially dropped but was recalled after injury to Stefano Sensi forced the latter to withdraw from the tournament.
Up front, Everton’s Moise Kean has been snubbed despite being called up for their preliminary squad, having enjoyed a bright loan spell at PSG this season with 17 goals in 41 appearances across all competitions.
Freiburg’s Vincenzo Grifo and Napoli’s Matteo Politano also miss out as Andrea Belotti and Ciro Immobile heads up the seven-man striker selection.
Italy will host Turkey in Euro 2020 opening match on 11 June with kick-off at 9pm CET, before facing Switzerland on 16 June (9pm CET) then Wales on 20 June at 6pm CET.
