Uncapped Rubin Colwill Named in Wales Euro 2020 Squad

Rubin Colwill has received a shock call-up for Wales’ 26-man squad for Euro 2020 despite having never been capped at senior level.

Colwill impressed in just six appearances for Cardiff under Mick McCarthy despite failing to score and made his Wales Under-21 debut in March as a substitute in a friendly against Republic of Ireland.

Euro 2016 two-goal star, Hal Robson-Kanu has been left out of the squad after failing to receive a call-up for last week’s training camp and found himself released by West Brom on Thursday (27 May).

Only eight Wales players who participated in the last tournament in summer 2016 have made the current squad, including Aaron Ramsay, Joe Allen and Gareth Bale

Newport’s Tom King has been snubbed in Rob Page’s goalkeeper selection as Crystal Palace’s Wayne Hennessey is joined by Leicester’s Danny Ward and Stoke’s Adam Davies in the squad between the sticks.

Charlton’s Tom Lockyer is the only defensive snub as Tottenham duo of Ben Davies and Joe Rodon headlines a nine-man defence, including Swansea’s Connor Roberts and Ben Cabango amongst others.

Nottingham Forest’s Brennan Johnson has been snubbed in midfield despite enjoying a strong loan spell at Lincoln City, as he helped the Imps reach the League One Play-Off Final this season where they lost to Blackpool.

Newport’s Josh Sheehan is another absentee as Colwill comes into the midfield selection.

Derby’s Tom Lawrence and Schalke’s Rabbi Matondo have both been omitted from the striker lineup with Manchester United’s Dan James promoted from midfield to up front alongside Gareth Bale, Kieffer Moore and Tyler Roberts.

Wales kick off their Euro 2020 campaign against Switzerland on 12 June (2pm UK Time) before facing Turkey on 16 June (5pm UK Time) with both matches in Baku, with their final group match against Italy taking place in Rome on 20 June (5pm UK Time).
