Hege Riise Names Team GB Olympics Women’s Football Squad

Hege Riise has named her 18-woman Team GB squad for this summer’s Olympics Women’s Football tournament in Tokyo, Japan.

Riise has named 15 members of her England team in this Olympic squad with Wales’ Sophie Ingle and Scotland’s Kim Little plus Caroline Weir representing the only non English members selected.

In goal, Chelsea’s Carly Telford is the only player to be fully snubbed as Everton’s Sandy Maclver is named as a reserve as Manchester City’s duo of Karen Bardsley and Ellie Roebuck are the only two selected goalkeepers, with Bardsley a surprise pick after leaving City on loan to join OL Reign.

Alex Greenwood and Millie Turner have been fully omitted from the defence as Arsenal’s Lotte Wubben-Moy is named as reserve, whilst Millie Bright, Lucy Bronze, Rachel Daly, Steph Houghton and Demi Stokes make the main squad.

Jill Scott and Keira Walsh are the only midfield survivors of England’s squad in April to make the squad as Georgia Stanway is promoted into the striker selection, as Ingle, Little and Weir come into midfield and Jordan Nobbs is snubbed.

Chelsea’s Niamh Charles has been named as the reserve midfielder after playing a regular role in the Blues’ domestic treble-winning season.

Up front, Man City’s Chloe Kelly misses out through injury as Bethany England and Beth Mead both miss out, with Mead being a notable surprise absentee given her versatility, as Manchester United’s Ella Toone is selected as reserve striker.

Chelsea’s joint top Women’s Champions League goalscorer, Fran Kirby heads up the striker selection alongside Stanway as Lauren Hemp, Nikita Parris and Ellen White all make the squad.

England’s Bardsley, Houghton, Scott and Ellen White are four of five survivors of the 2012 Team GB Women Football’s squad along with Scotland’s Little who have all made this squad.

Speaking of her squad selection and aims for the tournament, Riise said; ”

We will go there aiming to win and we will give everything we have to achieve success. I hope that Great Britain’s inclusion once more in the Olympic Football Tournament can inspire the next generation of young girls to play the sport we love.”

Team GB Chef de Mission for Tokyo 2020, Mark England has spoke of feeling ‘delighted’ with Riise’s squad selection, containing five returning names from the 2012 squad on top of 13 Olympic debutants who he expects to ‘relish’ the chance to represent Team GB in Tokyo.

Team GB will play Chile, tournament hosts, Japan, and Canada in their Olympics group from 21-27 July  2021.
