A tense final day of the 2020-21 Premier League season saw the European placings settled across Champions League and Europa competitions, whilst various players and managers bid their farewells.
With all matches kicking off simultaneously, Chelsea entered kick-off sat third but Ben Chilwell’s late strike couldn’t prevent a 2-1 away defeat at Aston Villa as Bertrand Traore and Anwar El Ghazi struck for the hosts.
Liverpool took full advantage of events at Villa to seal third and Champions League football as Sadio Mane’s brace wrapped up a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace at Anfield, in what was Roy Hodgson’s final match as Palace manager.
Leicester looked set to snatch fourth after 52 minutes as Jamie Vardy’s second penalty put them 2-1 up, only for Gareth Bale to grab a late brace after a disastrous own goal from Kasper Schmeichel as Tottenham fought back to win 4-2 and condemn Leicester to Europa League football next season.
Spurs meanwhile sealed seventh and will play in the newly formed Europa Conference League next season.
Pablo Fornals produced a brace and assist for Declan Rice as West Ham thrashed Southampton 3-0 to finish sixth and secure the last qualification spot for next season’s Europa League.
Arsenal consequently miss out on European qualification for the first time since 1996 despite Nicholas Pepe netting twice in a routine home win over Brighton.
Elsewhere, Sergio Aguero netted twice on his final domestic appearance for Manchester City as Pep Guardiola’s champions ran riot in a 5-0 home win over Everton.
Goals from Joe Willock and Fabian Schar saw Newcastle cruise to victory at Fulham, as Scott Parker’s Cottagers clinched 18th in the standings despite suffering a final day defeat.
Hal Robson-Kanu fired in a late consolation goal for West Brom as they lost 3-1 away at Leeds in Sam Allardyce’s final match as the Baggies manager.
Wolves’ final match under Nuno Espirito Santo ended in a 2-1 defeat to Manchester United as Juan Mata’s penalty ensured the Red Devils finish their league campaign unbeaten away from Old Trafford.
Finally, David McGoldrick curled in a 25 yard winner as rock-bottom Sheffield United snatched a scrappy one goal victory over Burnley at Bramall Lane.
