Trident have announced that David Schumacher has signed to race for the team in the 2021 Formula Three season.
Schumacher who is the son of ex F1 star – Ralf Schumacher, makes the switch to Trident after a tough 2020 season in F3, where the German failed to score a single point despite a mid-season swap from Charouz to Carlin.
Speaking on his switch to Trident , Schumacher said: “I’m delighted to race with Trident Motorsport this year and I think we have excellent chances.”
On Trident’s performance potential after running for the team in three of four days of post 2020 season testing across a pair of two-day tests in Spain last autumn, Schumacher said: “The team has been doing a really good job and the car was amazing in the two tests in Barcelona and Jerez.”
Schumacher also noted that he feels how ‘really passionate’ Trident are about their project and is excited for the new season.
As the first driver to sign for last-season’s vice-champions in the constructors’ standings, Schumacher has been allocated the number six car.
Trident Team Manager, Giacomo Ricci feels that Schumacher could well be a underdog despite his poor results of 2020, saying: “I think he has more to express and all the characteristics to achieve remarkable results.
Ricci also spoke of how ‘proud’ he feels that Schumacher has chosen to race for Trident in 2021 and how they have developed ‘interpersonal feelings’ and a ‘great working pace’ with Schumacher quickly as the Italian team look to topple their compatriots and twice-defending F3 champions for the first time.
Schumacher however isn’t the only driver to confirm their F3 seat for 2021, as Campos announced just hours earlier that Lorenzo Colombo will drive for the Spanish team this season in the series.
Colombo makes the step up from Formula Renault Eurocup where he enjoyed two seasons in which he took six wins and the Italian is #extremely excited to make the move. saying: “I can’t wait to start working with the team in order to learn as much as I can before the start of the season.”
Sporting Director of Campos Racing, Adrian Campos Jr has spoken of his happiness at sealing the deal just a week after his father’s unexpected death, having failed to secure Colombo in recent seasons due to various factors despite the Italian having formed a close partnership with the team.
Campos Jr however is confident that Colombo will prove why the team and his father were right to believe in him, saying: “I am sure Lorenzo will manage to demonstrate during this season why my father believed in him and rated him as an extremely talented drive of huge potential.”
Campos have also signed Belgium’s Amaury Cordeel for the upcoming season with the Belgian taking car number 21, whilst Colombo will drive the number 20 car.
