West Ham United have signed Jesse Lingard on loan from Manchester United until end of 2020-21 season.
Lingard has made just three appearances for Man Utd in all competitions this season after failing to make an impression on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s plans, with this move reuniting the England international with ex boss – David Moyes under whom Lingard made zero appearances in 2013-14.
Lingard instead found himself twice sent out on loan but feels that Moyes knows his potential, saying; “I’ve obviously had a previous relationship with the manager as he was at Man U and I’ve played under him before, so he knows my qualities and what I can bring to the team.”
Impressing Moyes and repaying his faith in bringing him to the Hammers therefore is key, as he said; “He’s got really good morals, he gets his team working hard and I’ve had a chat with him already and there are no guarantees – It’s down to me to put the work in and put the graft in…”
The 28 year-old also described the loan move as ‘another new chapter’ in his career although he isn’t taking anything for granted as a four-time trophy winner, saying; “Nothing is guaranteed but I’ve come here to work hard and help the team and bring my experience.”
Moyes meanwhile spoke of the extra attacking options that Lingard brings not only on flanks but in midfield too, commenting; We’re bringing in that versatility. I’ve wanted to try to get an energetic team at the moment and Jesse has been known for his work rate and effort, so I think he’ll fit in nicely…”
Since Moyes departed the Red Devils in April 2014, Lingard went on to score 33 goals and four trophies in four different competitions for Utd which excites the Scottish manager, saying; “I hope he brings us a little bit of quality too, and a winning mentality from Manchester United.”
Lingard is ineligible for Sunday’s Premier League clash against Liverpool after failing to complete his loan switch in time, meaning that his Hammers debut could come on Wednesday 3 February 2021 away at Aston Villa in a 8:15pm (GMT) kick-off.
Man Utd meanwhile confirmed that he won’t be eligible to feature for West Ham in their Fifth Round tie of 2020-21 FA Cup on Tuesday 9 February (7:30pm GMT). whilst wishing him the best as he looks to regain a spot in the England squad for this summer’s Euros.
