2026 UEFA Super Cup Preview

PSG seek to defend their title as they meet Aston Villa in the 2026 UEFA Super Cup. 

PSG defeated Arsenal on penalties in the Champions League final to book their spot in this showpiece, whilst Villa comfortably dispatched Freiburg in the Europa League Final to book only their second appearance in this match.

 

Team News

PSG have no fresh injury concerns to report and Lucas Digne could line up against his former team, having joined the French side from Villa last weekend.

Bradley Barcola could be rested amidst speculation over his future at the reigning European champions amidst interest from Liverpool.

Villa will be without midfielder, Amadou Onana after he ruptured his ACL whilst at the World Cup this summer with Belgium.

John McGinn and loanee, Alejandro Garnacho are available after recovering from respective knee and facial injuries suffered during pre-season.

New signing, Johan Manzambi won’t be risked after he picked up a knee injury during the World Cup.

Leon Bailey is unlikely to be fit for selection as he continues to recover from a muscle injury amidst interest from Hull.

PSG meet Villa at Red Bull Arena, Salzburg, Austria, on Wednesday 12 August at 9pm CEST (8pm BST), live on TNT Sports 1 in the UK.

 

Stat Attack

• This is PSG’s first-ever UEFA Super Cup meeting against Aston Villa.
• Villa are meeting PSG in a single-leg competitive fixture for the first time in all UEFA competitions – having previously met in a two-legged Quarter-Final in 2024-25 Champions League which they lost 5-4 on aggregate.
• Both teams have claimed one win apiece from their two previous meetings in all UEFA competitions, which came in the aforementioned 2024-25 Champions League Quarter-Final as PSG won 3-1 at home then lost 3-2 away.
• PSG have won just one of two previous UEFA Super Cup appearances (W1, L1), having lost 9-2 on aggregate to Juventus in a two-legged tie tie in 1996 then beat Tottenham on penalties in 2025 after a 2-2 draw.
• Villa won the title in their only previous UEFA Super Cup appearance in 1982, which was previously a two-legged format and saw them lose 1-0 at Barcelona before they won 3-0 at home to prevail 3-1 on aggregate.

 

Prediction

Having had numerous members of their squad away at the World Cup and returning at different times alongside a couple of their new signings, PSG haven’t exactly had a strong pre-season together yet but they surely can’t be as wasteful as they were last year before they clicked crucially at the end.

Villa meanwhile have had a large chunk of their squad back together early in pre-season but Youri Tielemans‘ exit leaves quite a gap to fill in terms of central midfield presence, which should be quite intriguing but Joao Gomes is a solid replacement signing.

Their defence however has been leaky in pre-season but I expect them to be much tighter and sharper now that the competitive action begins, although PSG really should prove too strong but I expect a great contest nevertheless if anything like their two previous clashes.
