2020-21 Sky Bet Championship: Week 21 Roundup

Norwich City remain top of the Sky Bet Championship as their title lead was trimmed to four points in a packed round of Boxing Day action.

Norwich suffered a fifth defeat in their last six Boxing Day away trips after Ismaila Sarr fired in from Ken Sema’s low cross to secured victory for fifth-placed Watford, who are now under new management of Xisco Munoz.

Swansea moved into second and now four points behind the Canaries, after goals from Andre Ayew and Jamal Lowe either side of half-time secured victory at QPR.

Bournemouth therefore slipped to third after their home game against Millwall was postponed due to a Coronavirus crisis within Gary Rowett’s visiting squad.

Sergi Canos netted his first-ever hattrick as Brentford edged a five goal thriller away at Cardiff to stay fourth, despite Will Vaulks grabbing a brace for the Bluebirds of which his first came from inside his own half.

Reading rounded out the top six after first-half goals from Tom McIntyre and Alfa Semedo gifted them victory over Luton, who found a late consolation goal through Kazenga LuaLua.

Down in the relegation zone, Wycombe remain rock bottom despite Garath McCleary’s equaliser as goals from Chris Martin and Famara Diedhiou helped Bristol City to a 2-1 home win at Ashton Gate.

Sheffield Wednesday stay second bottom after seeing Adam Reach’s lobbed goal cancelled out by Joe Rothwell in a 1-1 draw at Blackburn Rovers.

Ten-men Derby round out the bottom three after Martyn Waghorn was red-carded for a foul on Preston’s Alan Browne, who proceeded to curl in a 96th minute winner for the Lilywhites to add further insult to the Rams’ injury.

Elsewhere, Michal Helik’s brace helped Barnsley come from behind to stun Huddersfield in a closely fought Yorkshire derby, after Rarmani Edmonds-Green had put the Terriers ahead for his first goal for the club from Carel Eiting’s cross.

Coventry and Nottingham Forest found themselves held at home by Stoke and Birmingham respectively in mid-table clashes.

Finally, Middlesbrough’s home clash against Rotherham was postponed due to several players amongst the Millers self-isolating following a Coronavirus outbreak, which saw their game against Derby last weekend cancelled at short notice.
