Spanish midfielder, Alexia Putellas has completed a free transfer to London City Lionesses.
Putellas left Barcelona upon expiration of her contract on 30 June after a 14-year second spell with the Catalonian club – having previously spent a year with the club between 2005 and 06, during which she achieved 35 titles in total across five competitions consisting of;
- 10 x Primera Division
- 10 x Copa de la Reina
- 4 x Supercopa de Espana
- 7 x Copa Catalunya
- 4 x UEFA Women’s Champions League
The 32 year-old also delivered 232 goals in 508 appearances across her second stint at Barcelona and is now taking her first step at club level away from Spanish football, having previously played for Espanyol and Levante at senior level in her home country.
“I am thrilled to embark on this new chapter with London City Lionesses,” commented Putellas on her move to the Women’s Super League and the Lionesses’ aspirations to grow their reputation in the game as an independent club.
“The club’s ambition and its steadfast commitment to growing as a women-only independent club resonate deeply with me.
“Off the pitch, building on my passion for youth development, I am equally excited to work with Michele in elevating women’s football in England and on the global stage.”
Owner, Michelle Kang added that Putellas will too become part of Kynisca – a women’s sport organisation focused on high-performance culture.
“Alexia Putellas embodies the pinnacle of talent, dedication, and vision in women’s football. Her decision to join our independent, women-first club is a powerful endorsement of what we are building at London City and Kynisca
“This is more than a signing, it is a bold statement about the future of the sport. Together, we will compete at the highest levels while creating new commercial opportunities and development pathways for the next generation of female athletes.”
At international level, Putellas represents Spain and helped them win the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup title plus two UEFA Women’s Nations League titles.
