Formula One Launches ‘We Race As One’ Initiative

Formula One has launched a new initiative called ‘We Race As One’ in an attempt to tackle huge issues currently facing not just F1 but global communities. 

This announcement comes as the world currently battles against not just the Coronavirus pandemic but also racism and inequality, following Lewis Hamilton’s recent criticism of the sport earlier this month. 

F1’s first move as part of this initiative will be to display rainbows on cars and around the Red Bull Ring during the Austrian Grand Prix weekend of 3-5 July, as a symbolic thank you to key workers who assisted in the fight against Coronavirus.

The rainbow will then continue throughout the remainder of this season. 

There will also be displays of support in the battle against racism, of which F1 will announce clear pledges later this week in order to increase diversity and opportunity in the sport with the setting up of a F1 Task Force to focus on how to improve diversity in F1 at all levels. 

F1 CEO and Chairman, Chase Carey spoke of the importance in this new campaign stating that F1 needs to “stand united to say loud and clear that racism must end.”

#WeRaceAsOne comes six months on from F1’s first-ever corporate strategy release, in which innovation and diversity featured as key points concerning driver talent and the backstage workforce.

A statement from further highlighted this point, saying: “Recent events have reinforced the importance of those issues and the need for us to take action to make our sport better, improve opportunity and to have a positive impact on the world we live in.”

This campaign also comes in support of the FIA’s #PurposeDriven Movement which was launched last week. of which the aim is to underpin the F1 strategy for many years to come and make a difference in motorsport plus society.

Speaking on the unveiling of this new campaign, Carey said: “The #WeRaceAsOne initiative we have launched today, in support of the #PurposeDriven Movement launched by the FIA last week, is our way of saying thank you to the bravery and unity everyone around the world has shown during this unprecedented time.

“It will also be a platform for Formula 1 to come together and achieve results against the most important issues facing us as a sport and the world. 

“As a global sport we must represent the diversity and social concerns of our fans, but we also need to listen more and understand what needs to be done and get on with delivering.”

FIA President – Jean Todt meanwhile focused on initiatives which is aimed at increasing the ‘popularity and accessibility’ within motorsport, saying: “It includes new rules to reduce costs as well as initiatives to increase the popularity and accessibility of motor sport.

“Importantly, it shall also harness the positive contribution motor sport brings to society, covering all sectors from health, safety, economy, environment, education, inclusion and diversity.”

Todt also spoke of the importance of FIA rules, saying; “The FIA is guided by the Fundamental Principles of its Statutes, including the fight against any form of discrimination and notably on account of skin colour, gender, religion, ethnic or social origin. We must promote diversity in motor sport.”
