Wednesday 31st January PL

With only three games having been played on Tuesday night, Wednesday sees some tasty potential six pointer matches occurring all over the table.

Everton host Leicester in a lower top ten battle whilst there is a south coast derby as Southampton welcome Brighton & Hove Albion to St Marys.

The big match however takes place at Wembley as Champions League chasing Tottenham Hotspur host second placed Manchester United.

Chelsea vs Bournemouth

Chelsea enter this fixture in high spirits, after winning their last two games in all competitions.

Bournemouth meanwhile are engaged in a competitive relegation battle but pushed the Blues hard here last month, in their Carabao Cup Quarter Final clash.

Both teams however are unbeaten since mid December so definitely should be an entertaining game.

If the whole Chelsea team are on song, this will be a comfortable win but I think it will be a tight match.

Prediction: Chelsea 2-1 Bournemuth

Jake predicts: Chelsea 0-0 Bournemouth

Result: Chelsea 0-3 Bournemouth

Everton vs Leicester

Both teams are ninth and seventh respectively but Everton need a win here, to avoid being sucked into a 12 team relegation dogfight.

Since Claude Puel arrived at the King Power, Leicester have climbed clear and are currently having a solid FA Cup run too.

This match looks tight as the Foxes prepare for life for after Riyad Mahrez, after the Algerian handed in a transfer request.

Looking at the Toffees’ home average in seven areas and comparing to Leicester’s away average, this couldn’t be any tighter.

Per game average Everton (home) Leicester (away)
Corners 3.83 5.25
Fouls 12.92 9.25
Shots 10.5 10.67
Shots on Target 3.42 2.67
Goals 1.5 1.5
Yellow cards 1.92 1.17
Red cards 1 1

Although Leicester dominate corners and Everton have more shots on goal, clinical finishing has been an issue for both teams.

That needs to change here if either team are to take the three points so I am going to predict a draw here.

Prediction: Everton 1-1 Leicester

Jake predicts: Everton 0-0 Leicester

Result: Everton 2-1 Leicester

Newcastle vs Burnley

Sean Dyche
Can Burnley reverse their recent run of poor results?

Newcastle will be hoping that they can continue a decent January run as they face an out of form Burnley side.

Sean Dyche’s men last win came on 12th December at home to Stoke and they have taken just three draws since then.

Newcastle meanwhile have shown improvement after stuttering throughout November and early December, having taken eight points in past month.

Unlike Burnley, transfer speculation is still circulating around St James’ Park so I am wondering if any chatter might distract players here.

Even if so, I reckon Burnley will end their disappointing run of form with victory.

Prediction: Newcastle 0-2 Burnley

Jake predicts: Newcastle 0-0 Burnley

Result: Newcastle 1-1 Burnley

Southampton vs Brighton & Hove Albion

Southampton’s Mauricio Pellegrino needs to be above drop zone by Saturday evening or he could be sacked

Despite progressing to the FA Cup fifth round, Southampton boss, Mauricio Pellegrino is apparently fighting for his job.

According to reports, the Argentinean needs to get Southampton above the bottom three in next two games after going two months without a league win.

Failure to do so and he could be sacked with Mark Hughes lined up to replace him.

Brighton meanwhile are having a decent debut season but need to win more games against those around them.

Its all well getting draws against; Burnley, Newcastle and Bournemouth but its the away defeats against likes of West Brom and Huddersfield, which could cost them a second Premier League season.

In the league, the Saints average 1.15 home goals this season to Brighton’s meagre away average of 0.42 goals.

Looking at those stats, we shouldn’t expect much entertainment here.

Prediction: Southampton 0-0 Brighton & Hove Albion

Jake predicts: Southampton 0-0 Brighton & Hove Albion

Result: Southampton 1-1 Brighton & Hove Albion

Manchester City vs West Bromwich Albion (8:00pm)

Both teams won at the weekend so come here with extra confidence, especially West Brom after they knocked Liverpool out of the FA Cup.

Form wise, Man City are unbeaten in 23 of their 24 league games so far this season.

Alan Pardew’s Baggies on other hand, have a concerning record of (W3, D11, L10) but are unbeaten in four of last five in all competitions.

Realistically this is City’s to lose unless West Brom can repeat their performance from Saturday night.

Prediction: Manchester City 2-0 WBA

Jake predicts: Manchester City 0-0 WBA

Result: Manchester City 3-0 WBA

Stoke vs Watford (8:00pm)

Javi Garcia makes his Premier League bow at the Beet365 Stadium as Watford visit Stoke.

Since the meeting against Chelsea at end of October, the Hornets have taken just 11 points which has left them stumbling from a potential Europa League fight into a wide relegation fight.

Stoke City meanwhile won their last league game to move out of the bottom three, so will be hoping to build on that here.

The last two meetings here saw both teams take a 2-0 win each, meaning this should be over after first goal is scored.

I however don’t see a clear winner here so reckon this will be a draw.

Prediction: Stoke 1-1 Watford

Jake predicts Stoke 0-0 Watford

Result: Stoke 0-0 Watford

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United (8:00pm)

Can Mauricio Pochettino get an instant response out of his players as Real Madrid set their sights on luring him away?

Mauricio Pochettino will want an instant reaction from his squad after Saturday’s shock draw at Newport in FA Cup, as Real Madrid set their sights on luring him away.

Alexis Sanchez however will be difficult to keep quiet, after he wowed in the 4-0 cup win over Yeovil Town.

Amazingly these sides have only met at Wembley once, back in the 2008-09 League Cup final when Man Utd won 4-1 on penalties following a 0-0 draw.

Nine years on and Spurs are a lot stronger and have won their last two home games against the Red Devils.

Their record this season against fellow ‘big six’ sides however is poor with their only points coming, courtesy of a 4-1 home win over Liverpool in October.

Jose Mourinho’s side meanwhile have taken seven points against the other ‘big six’ teams so far.

They’re also unbeaten in last six away league games, so will be super tough to beat here.

Given that Mourinho will be making more changes and starting the in form Anthony Martial, if he and Sanchez can quickly link up and develop a rapport then this will be an away win.

Prediction: Tottenham Hotspur 1-2 Manchester United

Jake predicts: Tottenham Hotspur 0-0 Manchester United

Result: Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 Manchester United
