Manchester United have appointed Michael Carrick as manager on a permanent basis, following a successful spell as interim manager.

Carrick’s permanent appointment as manager marked a reflection of his successful interim spell, in which he has guided the Red Devils to third in the Premier League with just two losses in 15 matches, whilst Utd have qualified for next season’s UEFA Champions League.

Utd consequently opted to appoint Carrick as permanent manager on an initial two-year contract until June 2028, with a further 12-month option to extend his stay until June 2029.

Carrick reflected on his times at the club as both player and now manager as he spoke of his delight to commit his future to the club.

“From the moment that I arrived here 20 years ago, I felt the magic of Manchester United.

“Carrying the responsibility of leading our special football club fills me with immense pride.

“Throughout the past five months, this group of players have shown they can reach the standards of resilience, togetherness and determination that we demand here.

“Now it’s time to move forward together again, with ambition and a clear sense of purpose. Manchester United and our incredible supporters deserve to be challenging for the biggest honours again.”

Carrick took charge in January following Ruben Amorim’s sacking when Utd were sat sixth in the Premier League at time of the Portuguese’s departure, and has since led the Red Devils to a third-placed position with a run of two defeats in 15 matches.

The ex Middlesbrough boss has overseen a turnaround in mood around the club and within the senior squad with a clear possession-based playing style, which has been a key element of their improved form in the second half of the campaign.

Carrick also benefitted from Utd’s lack of cup distractions after they had crashed out of the Carabao Cup in the second round under Amorim last August, whilst Darren Fletcher oversaw a FA Cup third-round exit at home to Brighton just days before Carrick’s return to his former playing club.
