Manchester United have sacked Ruben Amorim as manager with immediate effect.
Amorim arrived at United in November 2024 and guided the Red Devils to the UEFA Europa League Final last season, where they lost to Tottenham amidst a 15th-placed Premier League finish.
This season saw him oversee a shock Carabao Cup second-round exit at Grimsby on penalties, whilst they currently lie sixth in the Premier League with one defeat in their last eight matches, amidst complaints over poor-quality performances despite a mixture of injuries and players away at Africa Cup of Nations.
Club bosses however have unexpectedly decided to part company with the Portuguese manager less than 24 hours after a 1-1 draw at Leeds United, with their league position given as the main reason behind his departure in a club statement on www.manutd.com.
“Ruben was appointed in November 2024 and led the team to a UEFA Europa League Final in Bilbao in May.
“With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change. This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.
“The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future.
“Darren Fletcher will take charge of the team against Burnley on Wednesday.”
