Wolves have signed forward, Adam Armstrong from Southampton for a £9 million transfer fee.

Armstrong had been the subject of interest from Middlesbrough but with relegation to the Championship looking a formality, Wolves begun preparation for their drop with a swoop for Armstrong which consisted of a £7m initial fee plus £2m in add-ons that Southampton accepted.

The 28-year-old’s move came after he netted 11 goals and contributed four assists in 32 appearances across all competitions, and he has signed a three-and-a-half year contract at Molineux until June 2029.

Manager, Rob Edwards issued a statement on wolves.co.uk in which he described his first signing of his reign in charge of Wolves as “really excited” to join the Old Gold.

“Adam’s really excited to be here. He’s a competitor and he’s got something about him that we need now. He was really keen to come and join Wolves, and wants to play for Wolves, so it’s a really good day for the club getting him in.

“He’s someone I’ve admired for a long, long time. He’s a really good footballer, a goal threat and a goal scorer. He’s someone who can play off the sides if we wanted him to, he’ll see himself as a nine and as a goal scorer, but he’s more than that.

“We were only going to bring people in if we felt they could really affect the group in a positive way, not just on the pitch, but around the whole place as well. Hopefully everyone really gets behind him and shows him that love really early on.”

Armstrong began his career at Newcastle where he graduated through their youth academy but failed to score in 21 senior appearances for the Magpies, amidst a successful loan at Coventry in the 2015-16 season which saw him net 20 goals in 40 appearances,

Loan stints at Barnsley and Bolton followed in the next two seasons, although his loan spell at Bolton was cut short in January 2018 after three goals in 23 appearances, as Blackburn swooped for him for the second half of the season where he scored nine goals in 21 appearances.

Armstrong subsequently completed a permanent transfer to Blackburn in August 2018 and went on to score 55 further goals in 139 appearances – as they consolidated their Championship status.

A move to Southampton followed where he has scored 43 goals in 173 appearances across five-and-a-half seasons, during which he scored 24 goals in 52 appearances to help the Saints regain promotion to the Premier League via 2023-24 Championship Play-Offs.

During that period he spent the second half of the 2024-25 season on loan at West Brom where he delivered three goals in 17 appearances.
