York City have signed midfielder, Mark Shelton from Barnet on a free transfer.
Shelton is York’s first official signing for next season which sees the Minstermen return to the EFL for the first time in a decade, having been relegated from League Two into Non League football in 2015-16 season.
The 29-year-old midfielder confirmed in a post on his X account that he is “delighted” to join York next season, once his contract at Barnet expires on 30 June 2026.

Shelton had scored 20 goals and contributed nine assists in 79 appearances for Barnet which included promotion from National League at the end of last season as champions, and in a farewell post to supporters of the North London club, he thanked them for allowing his to rediscover his passion for football.

Shelton began his career at Nottingham Forest and Burton Albion in their youth academies, but enjoyed a loan stint at Loughborough Dynamo from Burton, before he went on to represent Ilkeston and Alfreton Town.
A three-season spell at Salford followed between 2017-20 where he helped them get promoted from National League North into National League then League Two in consecutive seasons, before he spent much of his last season with the Ammies on loan at Woking then Hartlepool United.
He then joined Hartlepool in summer 2020 and scored nine goals in 111 appearances across two-and-a-half years before he spent 18 months at Oldham from January 2023 to June 2024.
