Dango Ouattara’s first-half injury-time strike saw Brentford dent Aston Villa’s Premier League title aspirations with a 1-0 victory at Villa Park.
Outtara netted Brentford’s winner in the second minute of first-half injury time after his initial shot was deflected, having pounced on Kristoffer Ajer’s long ball up the right flank into the box.
His winner also meant that Brentford achieved a Premier League seasonal double over Villa for the first time, with Ouattara having coincidentally got the winning goal when the pair met in West London in August 2025.
Brentford however had been reduced to ten men in the 42nd minute after Kevin Schade was red carded for a retaliation push on Matty Cash, having been intercepted initially by the latter’s sliding challenge.
Villa remained third in the table but now seven points off league leaders, Arsenal, whilst Brentford climbed to seventh following Fulham’s 3-2 loss at Manchester United.
Sat seven points off the summit following Arsenal’s win at Leeds yesterday (31 January), Villa were given an early scare as Brentford’s Schade rifled a seventh-minute shot wide across goal in an evenly-matched start.
Villa however went even closer in the 15th minute after Morgan Rogers – on the second anniversary of his move from Middlesbrough – played return signing, Tammy Abraham forward and the latter forced a massive block from Caoimhin Kelleher.
Ian Maatsen then blazed a 21st-minute volley over the bar whilst Emiliano Buendia and Ezri Konsa put separate shots wide, as Unai Emery’s Villains largely remained on top as the first half wore on.
Brentford however proved to be a near-lethal threat on the counter-attack much like Villa were in their 2-0 win at Newcastle last weekend, as Dango Ouattara pounced on a 25th-minute curled through-ball pass but was offside as he dragged his shot wide of his near-right corner.
Controversy however broke out in the 42nd minute after Schade was intercepted by a slide from Cash, which saw the latter collect him which led to him giving the right-back a soft push in frustration and consequently red carded by Tim Robinson.
Brentford however refused to wilt in spite of Robinson’s harsh dismissal of Schade and Ajer played a long ball up the right flank deep in the first of four additional minutes, with the ball collected and fired on goal by Ouattara from a tight angle.
Ouattara’s first attempt however was blocked back out to him and he calmly smashed his second shot into the left side of the goal, which put the Bees ahead at half time after Abraham’s attempt to equalise was deflected over the bar.
Emery subsequently substituted Lamare Bogarde for Leon Bailey at half time and switched Jadon Sancho to the left flank, which sparked more life into Villa’s attack early in the second half.
That tweak paid dividends in the 49th minute as Sancho cut back from the left corner to the edge of the box after a shove from Rico Henry, and bent a tightly-angled shot to his near-left corner which Kelleher spilled for Abraham to smash in on the rebound.
Referee, Robinson however disallowed Abraham’s first goal since his return to Villa in midweek from Fenerbahce, because the ball had marginally gone out of play after Sancho was pushed to the ground by Henry.
Abraham and Bailey saw further chances deflected as Brentford sat deep and soaked up Villa’s pressure, during which Cash bent his 65th-minute shot straight into Kelleher’s arms.
Kelleher then denied substitute, Harvey Elliott’s strike in the 85th minute before Rogers and Douglas Luiz put shots wide just moments later, before Bailey curled over the top-left corner late in the 90th minute.
Villa eventually couldn’t break down Brentford’s resilient defence despite numerous chances in ten minutes of injury time, which saw them suffer consecutive home defeats for the first time since January – February 2024 to dent their title aspirations.
Brentford meanwhile claimed their first Premier League away victory over Villa, having drawn and lost two apiece in their four previous trips to the Villains, and reignited their push for European qualification after two straight defeats.

Villa visit a resurgent Bournemouth in their next league clash on Saturday 7 February at 3pm GMT.
