Bromley forward, Nicke Kabamba is “over the moon” to have bounced back from racial abuse with their winner over Swindon.
Kabamba headed in a 89th-minute header to seal Bromley’s 2-1 comeback win at home to Swindon in a top of League Two clash at the Copperjax Community Stadium yesterday (24 January), after Ashley Charles had cancelled out Fletcher Holman’s tenth-minute opener.
The result left Andy Woodman’s (otherwise affectionately known as ‘Gaffer’ to the squad) Ravens still six points clear at the summit as Salford City became their nearest challengers in second, whilst Swindon slid to sixth as a result of other results elsewhere going against their favour.
Kabamba post-match revealed to Bromley’s YouTube channel that he thought that the match matched the pre-match hype and expectations, whilst he too credited his teammates for their improved second-half character to mount the successful comeback.
“Yeah it did. It did. From minute one, obviously them scoring early on. We had to weather the storm and then um Ash came out with an equaliser and then we just sort of just tried to frustrate them, slow down the game a little bit and then, it was just written for me to come on and score. So I’m over the moon.
Gaffer did ask for a goal as soon as I came on, so I was able to deliver.”
“Yeah we definitely started off so much quicker the second half and um it just shows what sort of character we have in the changing room. Uh how much we’re willing to fight for each other and how much we all really want to reach our goal.”
Kabamba’s winner however came a week after he had received vile racial abuse in the wake of his penalty miss in a goalless draw at Chesterfield, with the 32-year-old forward delighted at how he has bounced back with a crucial winner.
“Yeah, obviously there’s a bit of a meaning to it. Obviously it’s a goal to get us three points, but just for myself obviously what happened last week. Uh yeah, I’m just over the moon. Just obviously all I can do is do my talking on the pitch and I’m happy to have helped the team get three points today.”
Bromley however were only 1-0 down at half time due to exceptional saves from goalkeeper – Grant Smith, with Kabamba keen to iterate that the whole team had played their part in that first half where Swindon had outplayed them.
“Yeah. Uh he made one save when I think the guy went through on the left hand side and he’s stuck a leg out. So yeah, it’s everyone. It’s all of us uh all the way back from the goalkeeper to the back four midfield and obviously defending from the front as well. So it’s a brilliant performance all round.”
Kabamba has established himself as an impact sub with seven of his nine goals this season having been scored from off the bench, which he is pleased about as he joked that Woodman calls his impact subs ‘the finishers’ such is their quality when sent on off the bench.
“Yeah the gaffer calls us ‘the finishers.’ So obviously I was able to come on a finish, which is um really satisfying. But yeah we’re all in this together. We’ve got to try and stick with it. We got uh I don’t know how many games we got left, but Gaffer always says if we can take one game at a time, give it your all and see where we are at the end of the season.”
The match also proved to be a rare sell-out for the Ravens as they extended their unbeaten league record at home to 16 matches since April 2025, with Kabamba pleased to have seen the stadium packed and rewarded with a continuation of their unbeaten home form.
“Yeah, amazing. And even for the stadium to be sold out today, that shows that where we are, we’re doing so well. The fans are backing us and we need that as a football club, especially us as players. It’s so good to have a sold out stadium, especially here when we’re we haven’t lost in a while. So we just need to keep this up.
“Uh like I say, week in week out, never too high, never too low and then we’ll just keep going.”
