Bromley manager, Andy Woodman has iterated that his team are “pitting” themselves against Walsall in a top of League Two showdown.
Sat third in the table after their 2-0 victory at home to Salford, Bromley head to Walsall tomorrow (29 November) knowing that a win would put them top of the table if Swindon fail to beat Chesterfield.
Woodman in his match preview however is aware that their trip to the Saddlers won’t be easy after the pair played out 2-2 draws in both meetings last season, but felt that his team were “disappointed” to not win those games although he believes that Walsall are the favourites coming into this clash.
“Yeah two very close games. And I think on both occasions, we’d probably say that we were a bit disappointed not to win both, you know, with the way the games went.
“They’re an efficient team. They’re very good at what they do and it’s a tough place to go. Walsall, there no doubt about that.
“The one thing I would say is, you know, they’ve been up there for the last season, most best part of the last season and best part of this season. So, by far they’re the favourites, you know, and the pressure is on them.
“We’re Bromley and we’re coming up there, and still an unknown quantity to people, but that suits us. So, I’m looking forward to the game. We’re looking forward to pitting ourselves against teams that are top of the table.”
With the prospect of going top a possibility if they win and Chesterfield do them a favour, Woodman admitted that he had a challenge this week of managing his squad’s expectations as he reflected on how last season’s experiences has benefitted his team in this situation.
“Yeah it’s a balancing act because you want to keep them confident, you want to keep them buoyant, you want to keep them focused, but equally you don’t want them, you know, we’ve got some players in there that you got to make sure they don’t get carried away.
“I think probably last season’s a little bit of a reflection of that. How we started off so well and then couldn’t get a result for a bit. So we kind of using all the experience of last season really to make sure that we keep the group focused, feet on the ground and it does help if you have got some older pros around as well, keeping the group really focused on the job in hand.”
“Um but overall the lads are good. You know they’re a good bunch of boys. They want to do well for themselves, for me and for the club. So it’s a good feeling amongst the camp.”
Last weekend’s win over Salford through first-half goals from Omar Sowunmi and Will Hondermarck marked Bromley’s first league victory over The Ammies which left Woodman pleased with the display to punish their sloppy end product.
“Yeah it was a good performance. I thought we had that little moment which I spoke about where we had a little bit of luck. You know, they didn’t take their chances. Um, but that aside,
“I thought we were in complete control of the game. Um I thought we managed the game well once we got in front. We stuck to the task and I just thought it was a good all-round performance from the team.”
“The job done, three points on the board and move onto the next one.”
