UEFA Women’s Euro 2025: Group B – Spain vs Portugal

Spain meet Portugal in their opening Group B match at UEFA Women’s Euro 2025.

Spain will look to assert their status as title favourites despite having never won this tournament before, whilst Portugal will look to spring a surprise although their battle for knockout qualification lies against Italy and Belgium.

Team News

Aitana Bonmati is a doubt for Spain after she was hospitalised with viral meningitis last weekend, which saw her only re-join the squad on Tuesday (1 July).

Portugal have no fresh injury concerns to report coming into this match.

When is Kick-Off?

Spain face Portugal at Stadion Wankdorf, Bern, Switzerland, on Thursday 3 July at 9pm CEST (8pm UK Time), live on ITV1 and ITVX in the UK.

Stat Attack

  • Spain beat Portugal 2-0 in their only previous meeting at the Euros, which came in 2017 in the group stage in Doetinchem, Netherlands.
  • Portugal are looking for their first UEFA Women’s Euro win against Spain.
  • Claudia Pina has scored three goals in Spain’s last two matches (W2).
  • Portugal have kept just two clean sheets in seven matches coming into this tournament (W1, D2, L4).

Prediction

Having hammered Portugal 11-3 on aggregate across their two meetings in the UEFA Women’s Nations League earlier this year, Spain will be full of confidence and on current form it is difficult to see them not losing this such is their depth and quality.

Portugal therefore ideally need to go defensive and try to minimise any defeat for the sake of goal difference because to me, their battle to finish as Group B runner-up lies squarely against Italy and Belgium in their next two games.

If Portugal do go defensive then this should be a routine win for Spain but after the two recent clashes between these two, I can see a heavy result coming no matter what Portugal produce.

Prediction: Spain 4-1 Portugal

Result: Spain 5-0 Portugal
